    Hi

I have a Acer Aspire 5315 that has been causing me a lot of problem. It recently started to shutdown with no warning and keept doing it for a while until it died. I have searched the forum for answers but havent been able to find anything good. This whole week it hasnt been able to boot. I tried pulling out the harddrive, switching memory modules, cleaning up the clogged heatshink without any resultats. I think the shutdown problem was due to the clogged heatsink and the computer overheateting. Now it won't boot at all.

When I press the powerbutton the fan spins up and the power led turns green. 4-5 sec after that fan stops and after few more sec the green led turns off but no boot.

Youtube clip on what happends when i press the power button:

    Can someone help me?

I think its "Intel GMA X3100" but im not shore. The laptop dosent make any noise except the fan spin up from pressing the powerbutton.

    Acer Aspire 5315 ICL50-model.

Did either of you try this:
Take out the battery and AC power cord.
Hold the power button down for 1 min.
Connect the battery and power cord and try to boot.

Also what about removing the CMOS battery for a while.

My mom just showed up for Christmas and brought her same model Acer. She is having the same exact problem as you guys. Don't know if it is a bad battery or what but would like to try to troubleshoot it before we replace the battery.

Tried what you suggested about taking the battery and cord out and held the power button down for 90 seconds. No results.

I don't know what the "CMOS battery" is. Can you elaborate?

yea and mine hasn't had the battery i, in well over a year ... strictly home, so Acer recommends that this laptop for home use doesn't have the battery in ... and the cmos is welded on the mobo

CMOS battery is the little round metal thing in the right corner(when you open youre laptop) with a blue ring around it.

I really dont know what to do. I want to buy a new computer but if this is a easy fix then why should I. Now I have tried to shorten the CMOS battery but that didnt help either. If i just new what the prob was i would just buy that part. It sucks when the computer wont tell you whats wrong with it. And it seems many has this prob but nobody has the solution for it.

    HELP ME!

Ummm...its not POSTing...remove components one at a time, RAM is the most likely culprit. First step in troubleshooting.

    armind, I feel your pain.

Take a look here. Not exact model but we share something in common. I come to think of it as a design flaw. A button is better when 'pressed', not activated by the slightest of touches. Sometimes my machine boots up when i close the lid too hard.

Anyway, i swapped the RAM last year and still the same problem. I don't have the time or money to get it shipped and looked at or buy a new machine either.

I'm guessing you're thinking now how I am then still using it daily for almost two years, I shall reveal later. Will make a quick video later on today to hopefully make some of the pain easier.

Edit: I think anyone else who is facing the same problem should reply in this topic and hopefully we can get a list going and get word to Acer to take a good look at what is causing this problem.

I always do a troubleshooting before i post on a forum. Replaced the RAM. Cleand the fan. Tested the harddrive. Removed and reconneced BIOS battery. There is no more that i can do to get i working.

Yes. But the problem is i havent seen anybody on the net with the same issue as me.

if some one just could tell me what part I should replace and I will do so. Its much easyer for me to replace a 200$ part then buying a new computer.

    Damn u ACER!

Yep. same sh*t . Its like the motherboard isnt working. It dosent make any noise besides the 4-5sec fan spin up in the begining but still no post. Its really anoying to not know where to look.

Recived a reply from acers tech support. But they just tell me to send it in for a service check. d*uchebags...

How can it be since the fans spin up and the lights turns green? With our without the battery.

Could you contact me or reply to this post so that I can get an update from you on how you solved your problem? I'm referring to the above comment in this post.....

"Take a look here ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=203884.) ....I'm guessing you're thinking now how I am then still using it daily for almost two years, I shall reveal later. Will make a quick video later on today to hopefully make some of the pain easier......."

I'm researching how to fix my non-bootable (or psychotic when it does) 5315.
    Thanks!

I am having the same problem.

Just plugged a 2GB RAM module into the outer slot, leaving the inner one empty and now it is lobotomised.

The memory was off ebay so maybe dodgy. I've had it apart a few times since I last had it running (about a week ago) and I noticed the fan wasn't plugged in.

I plugged memtest86+ in on the USB stick and got nothing on screen. So I tried the other memory slot and plugged the fan in.

I know it can't have overheated in so short a time (not like no heatsink, lol!).

Now I am back to factory RAM and have tried another CPU and removing the hard drive. There is no battery and I am careful with ESD.

Now the power light comes on and I get a few seconds of fan activity and the DVD spins and the hard drive does and its light comes on briefly but it won't try and boot. I also hear a very faint, brrruuup brrrup almost like a 'beep beep' but sooo muffled.

I'm guessing I need to clear CMOS or leave it unplugged for a long while...

Will get back, but may need prompting...

I found a CD I thought was bootable, bunged it in and the drive was lit up for about 5 seconds and then the CPU fan came back on, sorry, keeps coming back on. BIOS must be there.

Also I've tried shorting the CMOS battery for 5 seconds (didn't fancy burning it right out) after leaving the lappy unplugged for a half hour.

Gonna see if I can get that BIOS update onto the CD next, if I can get to a working burner amidst all the PC detritus and drying (rotting) washing I am faced with.
