I have a Acer 5536-5142. When i bought it i thought i got a great deal. Then i learned i cant even upgrade my ram, it has the max of 4GIG. It has a ATI Radeon HD 3200 which should be a good card but it blows. I cant even watch mkv files in VLC, i have to use Media Player Classic. I tried AMD Overdrive, but i cant even modify anything. All the bars and settings do not move when i try to increase anything. I need to get more speed out of this junk. Here are 2 ways i came up with that might help, gimme ur opinions.
1. Replace the current 320GB HD with a 750GB 7200RPM hd to increase speed.
2. Replace the 4GIG of Kingston Ram with whatever the highest speed ram they make.
Does anyone know of a revised bios for this thing or know if my above options will help me out. Im desperate here the last thing i wanna do is buy a new laptop i just got this a year ago. All help is appreciated. THANKS.
my email is [email protected] if u dont wanna post here for some reason

What do you need the speed for- id the CPU lacking or the GPU.
As for the HDD- it's a good idea and it will improve overall experience but will not help with HD movies.
Faster RAM won't make a difference- it's negligible even when it comes to gaming let alone anything else. The amount of RAM is also sufficient- a lot of us here do serious gaming with 4GB so that's not what's limiting you.
HD3200 is an integrated card so by definition it can't be a good one. Also it's probably impossible to overclock.
The only potential option you have is to upgrade the CPU- that would take care of the HD playback problem. What CPU exactly do you have?
BTW- posting an e-mail may not be a good idea. One more post and you get PM privileges. -
first thing I'd try is the latest drivers for your video card. You've got about as fast a CPU as that socket can take.
When you say you have problems with mkv files, what res are you talking about? That machine should be able to play up to 720p videos well enough, but don't expect 1080p to work well. I had very similar spec hardware in another laptop around here (my son's 55xx series with a TL58 and integrated graphics) and it plays mkvs alright in Ubuntu. That machine no longer has a working windows partition, and he doesn't want to use windows anymore anyway, so I can't speak to windows performance.
