Hi:
I got this Acer 5570-2977 (5570z) computer from the august staples deal. Anyway, I am now trying to upgrade the RAM. The online Crucial memory detector software suggests that this machine can handle 4GB.
However, after installing a 2GB strip and leaving an old 512 in there, system only reports 2GB. Some benchmark software like CPUZ and Sisoftware Sandra reads 2.5GB for chipset, but 2GB for system.
Before I move on: what is the maximum RAM supported by 5570z? Is it possible to support anything beyond 2GB? I know this is a 32bit system so 4GB isn't possible. However, Windows XP system info can't seem to read anything beyond 2GB. Will the unread portion of ram beyond 2GB be utilized?
Thanks.
Ciac

the kingston information has 943GML which is exclusive to celeron. mine has a pentium dual core and has probably a 943GM or 943GMS. The chipset ID utility from intel doesn't seem to be specific. I think the other two chipsets in some references suggest support for 4GB. It is clearly read by Sissoft, so maybe it is supported by the chipset but not bios/software?

check with CPU-Z what chipset you have. I have a 5570 (not Z) that is also supposed to support up to 4GB with i945GM chipset.

hi:
thanks for the tip. I used CPUZ and it syas i943/940GML for chipset. Hmm..!! both this and sandra can read the extra ram. however given the chipset id (I thought GML is only limited to celeron given intel's information site), does it mean it's unrelated to BIOS and I will never have 2GB+ RAM access? -
It's possible. You could try a linux live CD to see if it would have all the available ram for use.
It sounds more like a chipset limitation than a BIOS limitation. -
yah i've been researching on the chipset since your last post and cpuz finding. it's strange because pentium dual core (my cpu) should only be supported by 945GM, while 940GML only supports single core and celerons. Besides the difference of course would be a max support of 2GB and 4GB ram.
Would it be possible that Acer tweaked 940GML to support the new pentium dual cores? Is that even feasible? CPUZ's identification isn't always accurate either (though close. mine's identified as T2080, but i think pentium dual core is a little different from that model).
thanks i'll load up a cd based linux and check it out. this wouldn't have to be so complicated of acer's support isn't so lacking.. -
i just loaded fedora livecd and it showed 2gb only too. well wouldn't it make sense since during booting the BIOS only recognizes 2gb? still can't quite pin down whether if it's the bios or the chipset. oh well. guess either way it looks like the single stick 2gb sodimm may have to go.. unless someone has tried this before and had better luck.
