My computer 70% of time automatically connects to my Broadband wireless BT Home hub router (UK) on start up and e-Net reports it connected at about 75% signal strength. It is security protected WEP encription.

However for the remainder of occasions it does its own thing and auto connects to an adjacent wireless router (a near neighbour I assume as signal strength is almost identical) which has no security protection.

Is there anyway to force the connection to my wireless point only as I have
to check everytime to ensure I am not (illegally??) connecting. A real pain!!!!

Any VISTA/e-Net settings I could adjust???

Any settings I can change under Vista?

I seem to remember I 'unticked' a box in Network Connections ... 'Automatically connect to non-preferred networks' that did the trick under XP but can't find a similar option under Vista Home Premium.

In Vista if you open "connect to a network" window (can do this by right clicking your connection icon on your task bar and selecting "connect to a network"), find the connection you want, in your case: Broadband wireless BT Home hub router or whatever your connection is called, right click it, select properties, choose the connection tab, and check the box "connect automatically when this network is in range"

Let me know if that works.

Also as soon as you can you should change your from wep to wpa encription.
Here is a short article that explains why,

    Thanks both of you.

Wookie85...have already done what you suggest and it still connects randomly to the next door neighbour.....I just check it is 'my connection' every time I go on line and change it if it has logged on to the wrong one.....a real pain. The fact it is just though a wall to next doors wireless
router and my router if 15 feet away with 2 walls in the path does'nt help.
Both signal strengths are 70-80% also not helpful.

I will upgrade to WPA/WPA2 ..the only thing that has put me off is
the need to input very long passwords...What is the minimum length
    allowed??

Follow the link in the article, and use the generated 64 character random hexadecimal password. Copy and paste. It's a secure site and randomly generates passwords everytime it is accessed. I believe the minimum lenght is 21 characters, but 64 characters is a much stronger password, remember the encription is only as strong as the password used.

Go to the properties for you nieghboors wifi network and make sure all the boxes are not selected in the connections tab window.

Have already unticked the boxes in my neighbours network too before I posted this thread so problem remains.
I have spent hours changing Vista settings to no avail!!

Thanks again for the prompt reply.
