    Hi

After using the laptop for an hour or so, the area below my right hand palm/just right from the touchpad, gets very hot and then stays like that. Although it it is not directly below the right hand palm area, I initially thought it was somehow the hard drive (Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00) that is getting too hot but it's running at 39 Celsius which I assume is acceptable.

Right below the area that gets so hot, is the memory compartment. Can the RAM area cause this sort of heat on the surface?
Is there something I can do to reduce the heat under the palm area? It gets really uncomfortable after 1 or 2 hours of use.

    Thanks

open it up, make sure if its memory, at first glance when looking at the attachment i thought the memory compartment was in the center (thats usually where it is in every notebook, never seen them at the bottom) just open it up to be sure, whatever is inside is probably getting hot. my guess is if not the memory, its the wireless card, try using 1-2 hrs with wireless off (possibly wired or no internet connection) and see what happens then...

According to the diagram in the laptop's User Manual, that's definitely the memory area. But can memory get hot?

I am permanentlhy on wireless when using this laptop, so I'll switch to LAN just to test if the heat goes away. Unfortunately the wireless adapter is not indicated on the diagram in the manual. Would be a pity if it is the wireless adapter causing the heat because that's the whole reason I got the laptop in the first place..

the fan sit's just under the memory and the v cut out at top is for CPU fan.touchpad.memory, and HD al run cold, not cool cold.it worked better than i wanted it too.so a result :)

i've just glued some 3inch foam with a tube running from under the fan to the back.its also stoped heat transfer to the legs when sitting in front of the tv with the laptop on my lap.great ;)

Thanks for the info Hoggie. I'm just annoyed that the manufacturer sells laptops with memory heat problems and that they're apparently OK with it!?

Can I assume that my laptop will be OK if I don't add extra cooling for the memory area like you did? What is the max temperature the memory can reach before chaos sets in? I take the laptop with me everywhere I go, I can't really build a similar solution because it would be unpractical for me to carry it around everywhere.

Maybe I can get one of these laptop coolers you put the laptop on. Not sure how effective they are since I will obviously need proper cooling specifically under the memory compartment. On the other hand, the downside to these coolers could be that they lift the laptop too high or get too heavy?

Do you (or anyone else) know (free) software that monitors RAM temperature?

not sure about the ram software.
they do make some light weight cooling pads which use the USB for power and are very good.
my wife has a small travelmate 230 and a USB powerd cooling pad that sit's nice on the legs and on a desk lifts the laptop to a nice easy to use angle....Maplin was the company she purchased if from.£19.00

its a small piece of 10mm mdf,i 12v CPU fan,multi-volt adaptor, some foam.and duck tape, the foam is stuck to the bottom with a cut out to take the ducting for the fan.i was going to make some changes.but it just works so well
the fan is under the memory panel and draws air from around the laptop.the area to the right of the touch pad is cold even when playing games.

    no

Is there software that can specifically measure the temperature of the RAM chips in your laptop? I can measure hard drive and CPU temp but not RAM temp.
