When I try to recover from PQService partition, and I chose (reset to default settings), it shows \harddisk0\partition2\ , then gives the error

    "Restore failed - reason 0xa0000001
Click OK to restart the computer"

    Can anybody help please ?

    P.S: I don't get the "cannot find file:C:\D2D\Images\*.WSI" error

Thanks for you help, but could you please help me find sth more relevant to me ?

    1 - I'm using an Acer Aspire 5630 laptop
2 - I've still got the PQService partition (9.7 GB, 7.5 GB used)
3 - I haven't got ANY Recovery cd's whatsoever (not willing to buy them either)
    4 - The error I get is "Restore failed - reason 0xa0000001
Click OK to restart the computer" , I DO NOT get the "cannot find file:C:\D2D\Images\*.WSI error"
5 - I've got the NAPP cd and the Post Acer Disk Formatter CD but I'm not sure if they are gonna help my miserable situation
6 - I've got hiren boot which has got so many tools to configure the hard drive or partitions

Can you give me any more information regarding the PQService partition ?
a - Should it be C drive or left with no letter or should it be a drive with a letter far down the alphabet (i.e. T or P or Q etc)
b - Should it be NTFS or another format ?
c - what should I set its parameters in order to get it working ? 0x07 or 0x12 or another thing ?
d - any other configurations to the PQService I should have in mind ?

Please try to answer all my questions, I'm in desperate need for help

Thank you for your time and efforts

First thing you should do when you get your laptop is to make the recovery cd/dvd`s using the eRecovery software, they are not usually supplied with a new laptop.
If you can still boot to windows the easiest option is to make them and recover the system with the disks.
Partitions are different for vista or xp but assuming you have vista
    1. PQService should have no label and no drive letter
    2. ACER drive C , NTFS
    3. DATA drive D , NTFS
As you have managed to start the recovery process I wouldn`t go fiddling with the drive parameters yet, did you start recovery using Alt+F10?
Let me know how you get on

Thanks for your time and efforts.

I've already formatted all drives except PQSERVICE, hence don't have the windows (with acer recovery). I can install windows 7 for example from scratch, then install acer erecovery on it but I doubt if that will work, actually I might try that. Please advise if that'll work.

The way I boot from e-recovery is that I use hiren boot tools which can edit hard drives and partitions, and I set the PQService as active, so the next time I restart it boots from PQService, this usually works fine for me, but only this time after booting from PQService and choosing restore to factory defaults, it gave that error I mentioned above.

I've already deleted other partitions, but maybe that's the problem, I'll make a new partition, label ACER, drive letter C, 60 GB, NTFS format. Then, another partition, label Data, drive letter D, 40 GB, NTFS format. Perhaps that's why it can't find the harddisk and gives me that error.

I thought PQSERVICE always had the label PQSERVICE, but alright, I'll remove that as well the drive letter.

This is a stupid question, but does it differ which partition number is the PQService, i.e. does it differ if the hardrive is like
    0: PQService
    1: ACER
    2: DATA

    OR

    0: ACER
    1: DATA
    2: PQService

I think that differs but do you know which one is preferred ?

    Thanks

Leave the PQService alone only remove the drive letter if it has one,my mistake with the label, create the ACER (c) AND DATA (D) both NTFS.
You should now have partitions in this order
    1. PQService
    2. ACER C
    3. DATA D
Change the PQService to active and the id to NTFS (0x07) reboot and the recovery should start.
Just did it this way using a drive in the same state as yours, only the PQService left and creating new ACER and DATA partitions and the restore worked fine.
Hope this does the trick for you
