I've inherited an older Acer 5630 Laptop which i have managed to get up and running with a fresh install of Windows XP Media Centre Edition.

The cpu fan spins up when the laptop first turns on, and stays spinning in the bios, but as soon as Windows starts it stops and doesnt come back on. After 20 mins or so the computer shuts down due to the heat. I've tried another fan connected to the header and get the same behaviour so i know its not the fan itself.

Any ideas why the fan doesn't get turned on via windows? Is there anyway to detect and force the fan to turn on? I've tried Speedfan and it didnt find a fan, which is probably not a good sign.

As its a clean install i havent got any of the acer apps on there, would the epower app sort it?

I tried putting a linux os on it to see if that made a difference but had the same behaviour. Going to try downgrading to an older bios to see if that makes a difference.
