Help, I have acer 5630 bought in 12/08, 5 months later---- charged overnight. Woke up in morning to find that top corner on back of screen is melted and bubbled up, like it shorted out from the inside. Sent to Acer and tech says " You had to put it next to a heat source". I told them NO WAY!, but they say there is no way this could happen without a heat source from the outside. I guess someone got in the house last night and took a propane torch to it, or maybe they held a candle to it for ten minutes. There is no damage to the screen and the unit still works fine. This is driving me crazy. Oh, I forgot maybe our chihuahua held the torch to it. Please let me know uf you have any ideas. Thanks!

sounds like your voltage adapter fried (the electricity from the wall is converted into a workable voltage for your laptop) this happens from time to time.

Also make sure your laptop is NEVER placed on carpet or soft objects for extended periods of time due to heat displacement issues.

Send it back for repair if it's under warranty. They will want the LX number on the bottom of your unit.

Thank You, Yes it is under warranty. They called me this morning from Acer repair center and told me it is not covered because I must have put it next to something hot, to melt the casing. They said " It is impossible for it to get that hot or have a short in this area behind the screen. They want me to pay $199.00 to replace it. It is sad, when people can't believe that someone is telling the truth. I called Costco and they said there hands are tied, because Acer denied the claim. I guess I was just wanting to know that I am not crazy and if someone might know how or why this happened. Thank You for responding.

Do you mean the outside part of the lid ? Was the lid closed when charging ? Just another thought :) ... have to ask... is it at all possible that a solvent of some sort has got onto the plastics.
Now if you could post a picture somewhere.....

Yes, back of screen in top corner, plastic melted back about 1/4 inch x 1inch long. I can see inside just a bit. there is a wire that comes up to corner inside. I am assuming that this is wi-fi antenae. The lid was closed, but not all the way lacked maybe 1/2 inch. No solvents involved. Was on the floor. Carpet, but not shag. Back of lid in corner melted back about an inch, inch and 1/2. Bubbled up a little. couple of pinholes in melted area.

I think you have only one option really, and that is perhaps to get an independent second opinion. If as you say, this has been caused by heat generated internally then there are very major safety issues involved.
At all stages contact Acer and keep them informed of what you intend to do, in writing as well as email. Ask for names of all you talk to.
If this is a problem, whether even just a one off, the safety issues are such that Acer I am sure would want to resolve it quickly to your satisfaction.
