Hi all, great job on your reviews about this notebook, I managed to read them all. :acer: I'll be getting mine later on this week and I'm still not at ease with the idea of reformatting it as soon as it arrives. I heard it can give some problems after the new installation and need some final assurance before going ahead and do it. I got all programs that come with it (including drivers) from the UK ACER site, would that be a problem to use them if mine is the US LX.AA705.104 version?

    Thanks for your support

I reformatted and installed XP Pro as soon as I got my 5672 (the x1600 version, LX.ATD05.014). I got my drivers from the Acer Panam drivers page. They all worked, but there are more there than necessary. I had to do a bit of experimentation, but in the end everything worked.

I know you have a different config, but I'd imagine that all the parts aside from the graphics card are the same, and even the graphics card should use the same ATI drivers.

If you're going to do it, here are a few things to watch out for:

    1. Use the " Audio Driver v5.10.0.5223" at the bottom of the page instead of the "Conexant Audio Driver v5.10.0.5191" at the top. v5191 apparently causes BSODs with certain apps like Adobe Premiere -- found that out the hard way.

    2. Get updated touchpad drivers from Synaptics directly, or else scrolling won't work in programs like Firefox.

    3. The modem driver is " Conexant Modem Driver v7.35.0.0", not the other one.

    4. The ethernet card driver is " Broadcom 5789E LAN Driver v8.27.1.0"

    5. Install the ATI VGA driver before the Acer Empowerment stuff; the ATI driver includes the .NET Framework 1.1, so you don't have to download that separately.

    6. The 802.11 driver is " Intel 802.11a+b+g Wireless LAN Driver v10.1.0.11".

    7. At the end, if you're left with one unidentified device in the Device Manager, you probably need the " CIR Driver v5.3.2600.2".

Ok thanks, I got all the drivers from the UK site. They seem ok; my friend has this model too and said that it would be much faster (although mine is not that slow). Would it be a problem if I repartition the HDD as needed and get rid of the hidden recovery partition? I think I’ll use the home edition with the cd key they give you with the notebook.

I erased all the partitions on my hard drive when I installed Windows, so I assume the "hidden" partition is gone too?

They should have... if you have the 100gb model you should have about 96gb available for partitioning .. check ..

i was thinking about getting the 5672, i was wondering where on the uk website did you get all the programs that come with it, ( not just the drivers), because i heard some of them are useful. (and do u guys have heat issues on your laptops?)

Well I knew about the heat issues, many talked about it in most of the reviews about the 5672, even in this forum, but it doesn't bug me that much yet (and I tried out alot of games on it to check out performance :) ). You should get a wireless mouse for it, it almost a must, the touch pad gets hot too  . But still it is a very nice machine, i like it. The UK site for the drivers is http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5620_5670.html . It has all the drivers and eprograms on it.

Holy CRAP! Hit the nail in the head. Thank you so much.

One more question... If I may. When I play MP3s back in the laptop they skip. They skip A LOT in Windows media player, and a little in winamp. This never happened before. I am using the conexant driver. Any ideaS?

Sure. And as for the MP3s, have you tried the updated drivers I mentioned in post #2? The version 5223 ones?
