Does the 5672WLMi have more than one fan? A case fan as well as a CPU fan? My sister called me up and said there's a 'terrible noise' coming from what she believes is the fan... it's on the side where the fan blows out. I'm looking to see if I can replace it myself, but I'm not finding anything about a secondary fan. Is that just where the main fan on the heatsink is blowing out?

Just one fan. Pretty sure mine went out recently as well. Fan won't kick on anymore and that side of the case heats up until the laptop just shuts down after 10-15 min.

Unfortunately it's a heatsink & fan module that runs $50-60 before shipping. You might be able to replace just the fan but it looks interesting to take apart.

I just tried to update my BIOS to 3219 but it appears I already have that version, which is the original from 18 mos ago. There are NO fan settings in BIOS.

Where did you find the part? I'm concerned about replacing the entire unit.. I think I'd have to clean off the old thermal goop, etc. to get it to cool properly.

Acer won't sell it to me without the serial number, which I don't have on me of course, since it's my sister's laptop and I really wanted to order it today to get it to her place for Christmas, and she wouldn't be able to get it to me until later tonight. GRR. I guess they aren't interested in our money. This store http://www.notebooksolutions.ca has three in stock. I wonder if they're okay...

I am having the exact same issue. I have my serial number, and I e-mailed Acer technical support. Hopefully I will be able to tell you how much a heatsink/fan assembly would cost.

At circa $80 including shipping, notebooksolutions.ca is not an attractive solution, but I suppose I won't do much better than that.

According to notebooksolutions, the fan in the laptop is a Sunon Maglev, with the following model and product numbers:

    Sunon Maglev GC056015VH-A, B1913.13.V1.F.GN

It may be possible to procure just the fan and not the entire heatsink assembly. I have also sent e-mail to Sunon, in the hope of finding this specific fan.

I'll post if I find anything from either Acer or Sunon.

Didn't have much time so I went ahead and bought it from Capital Data in Lansing Michigan. The second time I called Acer they gave me the name of a couple companies that sell their parts instead of just blowing me off.

Capital Data 800-999-4409 (They were the most expensive but they would ship _today_)
    Grand Tech 800-567-0586

The part number for the entire unit is 60AA7V7006

Good luck on getting the fan, and if you do, please post it here and how easy or hard it was to install. If you find it very soon, maybe I'll get that and sell the entire unit on Ebay or something.

    Quick update:

Sunon informed me that the fan was discontinued, and told me to contact Alpha and Omega Computer Corp (aocusa.com) to obtain a replacement.

I'm still in contact with Sunon and I have an e-mail sent to Alpha and Omega, but no particularly useful information from either at the moment.

    I hope it helps.

That's the next step. After the holiday I'll give them a call, but I'm fairly certain they're going to try and sell me the entire unit, not just the fan.

I put it in over Christmas... ended up picking up some antec silver at Circuit City when I realized there were what looked like, literally, a piece of tinfoil between the heatsink and gpu... there may have been one on the cpu too, but it came off when I lifted up the old heat sink.

Temps went down a few degrees from the 70s playing WoW down to mid to high 50s with regular usage and 60s for WoW, right away. I just emailed to ask her if they've gotten better since.

One thing I noticed with the new heatsink fan... it never seemed to go into 'high', whereas her old one seemed to be high speed all the time. I'm not sure if that's because it didn't have to, or because it was quieter, or it couldn't... but I don't think she's had any problems.

Hrm. Interesting. I'll look out for that when I get around to replacing mine.

I have been completely unable to get ahold of anyone who can provide me just the fan, so it seems I have to purchase the whole heatsink assembly. I'm rather disappointed that I have to pay circa $75 to replace a $10 fan.

I just installed a new thermal module yesterday.

The metal sheets where the CPU and GPU touch the module seem to be Acer's interpretation of thermal interface material. If you remove it completely, including the material between the silver and the copper and apply new thermal interface material, it's likely that you will get better thermal performance.

I just left it alone, I was too lazy to fix it.

Best of luck to anyone with the same problems.

DO NOT EVER BUY AN ACER. This problem is caused by a faulty fan. My fan went out 1 day after my warranty expired and acer wanted 150.00 dollars to fix the fan. I have looked into this issue and the fans have been discontinued so good luck finding a replacement. My laptop go so hot when the fan went out that the hard drive failed and I almost lost 6 months of work were it not for my continual backups.

Acer support was horrible, the hardware they use is horrible and their drivers for the flash card reader is not incompatible with any of my other devices. This is by far the worst computer I have ever boughten. Good luck to all those dealing with this crap.

DO NOT EVER REZ OLD POSTS FROM THE GRAVE.

Go QQ over in the corner with other ppl. You can all go eat sour grapes with your friends.

Would you drive you car without engine oil? Or without radiator fluid? WTF do you think is going to happen when a cooling device breaks and you foolishly continue to use it. That's not acers fault that is your own stupidity.

So life happens, things break with use.... such a hard concept to grasp I know.
