I purchased a new 5680 Aspire and my aspirations have frozen.
The unit keeps freezing up and then I have to restart. I sent this to be checked after 4 days of trying to sort it out. I recd this back from the Acer labs(in israel) and now it shuts down programs, blanks out the screen and generally is a pain.
Has anyone had any experiense with this laptop. ??![]()

Where are you located? is your laptop overheating? Or is it a software/hardware problem?

Received mine 2 weeks ago. A lttle slow at startup but that's probably because of all that bloatware. Otherwise, no problems with it & perfectly happy with it.

Hi all,
I just bought a new Acer Aspire 5680 laptop and it keeps switching itself off not long after I boot it up. I am running it off the AC adaptor and the battery is fully charged up.
I booted the laptop up and waited for it to run me through the XP config wizard that you get with a fresh install.
Then I sat through 10 minutes of the Acer management wizard installing all the Acer apps and drivers for LAN, bluetooth etc.
Once that was set up, I wanted to set up a wireless connection, but the laptop switched itself off. It wasn't anything like going into hibernation or shutting down properly. Instead, it just turns off completely and I have to press the power button for it to boot up.
It keeps switching off after 1 or 2 minutes after booting up into the windows desktop. I have not installed anything on it.
The furthest I got was to finish installing Norton (through it's wizard) and upon scanning for updates, it switched off again!!!
I have read there have been lots of problems with Acers (although, I admit, not knowing these problems before I bought it). Does anyone else have the same problem as me?
If so, what did you do to solve the problem? I heard sending the laptop back to Acer is not worth my time as their support is crap.
Any help with this please? -
Hi,
A few months ago i had a similar problem. I've got an Acer Aspire 5680 series, the 5685 WLMI.
For no reason and with no warning the laptop just power off completely (not just shutdown!!). I found it bizzarre as there were no viruses, no warnings, no startup messages and no event viewer system errors.
A couple of months ago, i put some extra memory and i decided to have a quick look for signs of dust, but saw no big deal - in desktops, when you have a dust problem is really wasy to see, so i thought nothing of it.
Wrong! So my problem continued, but became agravated.
Ended up with today the system just powering off 15 minutes after starting an AVG complete scan.
So again i suspected the temperature/dust problem and got the Intel Thermal Analysis Tool, and re-run the softwares that would cause an issue and bam there it was. Idde speed the laptop would be at 75C, with a couple of browser sessions and AVG scan it would bump up to high 80C and over, eventually getting to 100C which is the dual core t7200 maximum temperature and indeed it powered off!
I opened the main back panel (same that access the memory) where the fan is situated, unscrewed the fan top plate and also the other 2 screws of the fan mounting and there is was: a this film of dust, resembling a piece of foam, just over the air exhaust. I took that out, and blew on the fan a couple of times and put everything back together.
Now my system is runing at mid 40C to mid 50C on idle, with lots of software and full AVG scan goes to high 60C and some 70C, so system is now happy! And i'm happy too as no power offs, no data losses and fan noise has decreased massively - poor old thing must've been working overtime!!
Hope this helps someone out there and - don't be as complacent as i was.
PS: for this i only needed a set of precision screwdrivers and 10 minutes! -
I have owned an Aspire 5680 series (the 5684WLMi) with XP for 18 Months now. This lappie works about 15 hours a day six days a week.
Happy to report that there has not been a single issue/problem in this time.
The lappie is still to this day a pleasure to use.
I dont fiddle too much with it though as it is used mainly for business purposes. -
TeeJay,, glad to hear you have had such great service outta your lappy... i know mine has been great... but i've had a few acer BIOS issues,, but mine too has been worry free..... except for the worry i cause
-
I remember a few years back that most computer users never even knew what a BIOS did or even stood for. They simply used the computer and that was it.
How times have changed though.
It's a crazy world because a bad BIOS flash is not nearly as dangerous on a lappie as it is on a PC.
Remember people doing a flash and the mains goes off? Result: corrupted BIOS and the PC won't even boot. Result: a new Motherboard (unless the BIOS chip was socketed). -
I would be very interested in temperature readings from a 5680 under varying load conditions. I did a clean install of Vista on my 5680 with the latest Acer drivers, but did not install the Acer ePower management software. I run BOINC on one processor, a low priority task that uses all available cycles. A few weeks ago, I was running an online training package with fairly intensive graphics when the laptop suddenly shutdown. PC Wizard 2008 reported core temperatures of up to 95C. With only BOINC running, core temperatures were 89C. The only way I could keep the laptop running with a normal application set was to reduce processor speed to 80%.
I checked the fan and did not see any obvious dust issues. However, after putting everything back together, core temps were around 78C with BOINC on one processor and processor speed at 100% (2GHz).
I since installed the Acer ePower application. With both processors at 100% load, temperature rose to 90C, the fan kicked in and temperature dropped to 83C. Core temps then fluctuated regularly between 83C and 91C.
Subjectively, the air coming out of the laptop vent does not appear to be as warm as I remember. Are the temps shown above normal or do I still have a problem?
Thanks, Norbert -
Have run BOINC on numerous occasions.
Processor never hits 80 Degrees Celcius. No matter what the ambient temperature is or how long it runs for.
Lappie has never shut down no matter what I throw at it.
Idle temp for processor: 45 to 55 Degrees Celcius.
Hard Drive: Up to 65 Degrees Celcius on a very hot day about 2 years ago. Very worrying.
Graphics 7600: Idles at around 50 Degrees Celcius.
Then I built a cooler for this great lappie about four months ago.
HDD temp is down by at least 15 Degrees Celsius.
Processor fan rarely turns on (if at all anymore)
Graphics still idle at around 50 Degrees Celsius.
This lappie works. On all day and late into the night too.
With the custom cooling pad it is good to go for a long time still.
