    Hiya,

My Acer 5684WLMi came with a load of crap software pre-installed with it. Also, the Acer software team must have been having a laugh when they decided to split the hard drive into 3 partitions. Anyway, I formatted it, installed all of the drivers on this web page:

    http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_3690_5610_5630_5650_5680.html

I did not install any of the Acer 'tools':

    Acer eDataSecurity Management 1.00.26
    Acer eLock Management 1.7.11.2
    Acer Empowering Framework 2.1.21.41
    Acer eNet Management 1.01.3.011
    Acer ePerformance Management 1.0.10.21
    Acer ePowerManager Management 1.8.10.062
    Acer ePresentation Management 1.1.4.819
    Acer eSettings Management 1.3.5.42

Are any of these actually important? My main concern is this:

Will Windows XP Pro downclock my T5600 CPU when it is not being used much, or do I need to install some Acer software from the list above in order for this to happen?

Also, is it possible to check the CPU's *ACTUAL* clock speed at any given time? I get the feeling that SiSoftSandra just tells the maximum clock speed of the CPU.

    Thanks in advance,

    ta2

Intel Mobile CPUs (except some Celerons) have SpeedStep, which regulates the speed and the voltage of the CPU based on the load it has. It is automatic, if you want to check what your CPU is running at you can get RightMark CPU clock Utility, which leaves an incon in the system tray telling you thing such as current clock speed, OS and CPU load. Its a nifty little tool, I usually have it running in the background.

And I never use any of the Acer stuff, I see no need for any of it since it takes up system resources, and doesn't do anything you can't find in handy Windows, or 3rd party tools, should you need the functionality.

Thanks a lot! :) I'm glad I don't have to install any of that Acer software. When This time of day yesterday, this laptop had Yahoo! Toolbar and Norton Antivirus preinstalled without even asking me if I wanted it... not to mention all the other rubbish.

    Thanks again. :)

I usually disable stuff via the control panel. I never use the cardbus or WiFi so I switch them off in there.
