    Hi,

I have a new Acer 5740g 6979. I am not able to play games on it. As soon as i progress a bit in the game, even at lowest resolution and everything set to low, the laptop shuts down after a while. it powers off.

I have updated the graphics drivers. but still its causing problems. tried playing two different games. it still crashes.

    Is this a known issue?

Has this happened to anyone else before?

Use HWMonitor to monitor temperatures while gaming. Maybe start 3D Mark06 test- it doesn't take much time to complete so there's a chance the laptop won't power off during it. What are the temperatures?
Do you hear the fan working?

i do hear the fan running. the game plays for a couple of minutes. and after 1-2 minutes into the game, it just shuts down. No warning nothing. It powers down completely.

let me run the tests you suggested.

Could it be a problem with the Video ram or something that i read about in the other posts?

Check out the simple stuff first, temperatures, processor, RAM, 3D stress tests.

I ran 3DMark 06 and Hwmonitor. My GPU temperatures go to 103 C when graphics are running. HWMonitor says max as 105 C. Is that causing the problem? But the computer did not shut down while running 3D Mark 06

Yes it appears to be a problem. You can verify that the reading was in fact correct by running it again with GPU-Z monitoring the temps this time (set it to show max).
For reference- my 5740G reached 67*C in 3DMark06 while OCed.

If GPU-Z confirms the readings you should RMA it. Most likely the heatsink isn't even touching the GPU

Even GPU Z reported temps reaching 105-106 C and i monitored while playing the game, the laptop powered down.

If GPU-Z confirms the readings you should RMA it
Umm..excuse my noobness, what do u mean by RMA?

do u suggest that I return the product? since it seems to be a manufacturing defect?

Yes and yes. Return it and it seems to be a manufacturing defect.

RMA is when you call acer and get authorization to return the item for warranty issues.

Yes. You should either get it replaced (if possible) or repaired.
RMA means Return to Manufacturer Assignment or Return Merchandise Authorization or Return Material Authorization but it's all the same in the end.

Sometimes you can have a notebook replaced at once if there's any problem in a certain period after the purchase, other times it just has to go to the Support Center for a repair. Anyway check how it is in your case and proceed with RMA procedure.

RMA means Returned Materials Authorisation or any other abbreviations you like that better describes the process of getting the maker to agree to take the thing back before sending it off.

Usually having denied it all, said they never heard of the issue and said you must have broken it they will eventually issue an RMA number that needs to written clearly on the package (or they generally don't even bother to open it). As the GPU has got so hot it has done several emergency shutdowns I would prefer an exchange by the retailer to a repair (which wil most likely involve adding some thermal compound to your long suffering GPU and returning it to you :)
