    Hello everyone..

Trying to help my brother get his fairly new Acer 5742 booting again.. he turned it on this morning to find that it makes it as far as the Windows logo screen then goes black.. same thing happens on safe mode..

Having run into a similar problem on my home-built desktop, I thought we'd just run Startup Repair for him..

.. but for the life of me, I can't find it..

The Acer System Recovery (Alt-f10, or alt-esc-f10, I forget) just wants him to either reset to factory or reset to factory with backup .. F8 doesnt give the 'Repair Computer' option..

Im doing this all by phone and text with him as he's 4 hours away.. so can't throw my Win7 disk in his system to boot off that..

Sooo.. has acer for some inexplicable reason disabled Startup Repair? If not, how do I get there?

    thanks,

    Brett

He needs to go into BIOS setup (F2 at boot) and verify that D2D recovery is set to "enabled" then reboot and press ALT+F10 when Acer logo is visible (during BIOS POST but before Windows starts loading).
    Timing is important here.

If he had burned recovery DVDs he can also change boot order in BIOS to set the DVD as first boot device, place a recovery DVD in the drive and again press ALT+F10 when he sees Acer logo.

D2D was enabled.. and he still ends up with only 2 options.. reset to defaults and reset to defaults with backup of user data..

Unfortunately we didnt burn recovery discs (does ANYONE actually do that? :) ) when we got the machine..

How is Startup Repair this much of a pig to access?

I dont usually deal with OEM stuff.. can he create a System Repair disc through Backup and Restore on a friends system and then use that disc to access Startup Repair? (or a friends Win 7 install disc..?)

    thanks,

    Brett

Startup repair is available only on "normal" disks that install Windows, nor recovery disks that revert it to factory condition.

As for the options he has- that's all you can do with eRecovery. To do a proper startup repair you would need a "real" Windows DVD.
