My significant other's out of warranty Acer 5742z's Led LCD seems to have died. (Unless it's some other issue).

On booting the Led LCD screen no longer lights up, it is completely dark. I can faintly see the Acer and Windows logos on boot. Let me stress the I can faintly see part, the scree is virtually pitch black and this renders the laptop unusable. I have to shutdown blindly (Windows key+tab+tab+Enter).

I'm trying to figure out what is the likely malfunction and what part(s) probably need to be replaced.

I'm asking here because Acer support in my country will charge me an arm and a leg to fix it.

    Help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a backlight failure- not that I know how LED backlight could fail but it apparently did.
Replacing the whole LCD screen would be the easiest (but not necessarily the cheapest) way of dealing with this issue.

The cheapest but a lot more fiddly job would be attempting to replace the backlight itself ( example)
