Turn it on via power button, it flashes green, has a "pop" sound and then immediately turns off. Randomly powered off during net browsing and was not terribly hot.
Any ideas? I'd rather not replace the motherboard.

Nothing? I'm starting to lean to motherboard failure.

Is the PSU working and/or battery charged according to respective LEDs?

Yes the PSU is working, I even tried another working PSU from a similar laptop, same problem. Battery is noticed... there is a green LED, but when I try to power it up with the battery, nothing happens (unlike with PSU.)

Try removing the battery and powering it only via PSU.
