Hi guys, wondering if you could help me out,

My 5920's fan is always on and even doing something like browsing the net or installing a program sets it even higher. Altering power management to power saver doesn't even make a difference to fan speeds. Having downloaded speedfan, I'm noticing the temperature settings of the CPU never drop below 50 even when doing nothing and the fan really starts to make some serious noise when the temps hit 60s-low 70's. Just wondering if this temperature is normal and why the fan is always on. Could a Bios upgrade be needed? If so, I'm a couple of versions behind the lastest one on ACERs website (I have 3808 and the latest is 3811), do I need to install them in order or just go for the latest? Thanks!

Thanks Big, Seems to have improved somewhat, after the BIOS upgrade- average temperature reduced to hi 40s when doing basic tasks (web browsing, etc). Is it normal for the fan to always be on permenantly and is it right to feel a significant heat source from the lower left of my keyboard?

Another thing I've experienced (old post a while back) is an odd high pitched scratching noise coming from my laptop maybe every 5-10mins. Only lasts for a fraction of a second, but doesn't sound right. Know what that might be?

Fan can run continuously & it's ok.don't worry about that.BTW left side of the system case getting hot due to VGA card & CPU.

Scratching sound due FAN or HDD.Which side? :)

    Hi...

You said 'BTW left side of the system case getting hot dur to VGA card and CPU'....is that normal too? Is there anyway - aside from a laptop cooler - to reduce the heat...I mean, in summer (at least here in the dusty plains of central India), the lower left side - the palm rest - does get quite warm...very warm in fact.

The temp range, however, is as you guys have mentioned...with me using SpeedFan and NHC. I don't know or have the way to read the surface temperature on the lower left side palm rest. BTW, I also updated the bios to the latest.

    Cheers!

Notebook coolers like SALMAN NC1000/2000 can reduce heat .I'm highly recommend them :D

Might invest in one of those. Temp readings are now average mid 40's since bios upgrade, odd. Hopefully a pad will get the fan off altogether. Couldn't tell you exactly where the sound if coming from, I'll try to identify the area, but all I know now it's that it's not coming from the speakers!

heard it about 5 times in the last 5 mins (positioning my head right above the keyboard!) I'd almost certainly say its coming from the middle to lower left of the keyboard.

Hi - I also have Acer 5920 - and get the same scratching noise. In fact, see my two posts on the subject :)

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=248324
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=213568

The way you have described the sound seems identical. Another Acer 5920 user replied and has the same noise. A Dell user with the same HDD (Toshiba) reported the same noise.

So I think it is the HDD. It's weird that you get the noise every 5-10 minutes ... mine is only a few times every month. But it is quite loud and certainly doesn't sound right ... I haven't had any real errors yet, but I guess it's not good... If a HDD was to "scratch" the surface of the disk, would it be damaging itself? I've done Error Check and HDTune and neither found any problems (Error Check just "moved a few unused indexes" or something like that)...

Going back to the original topic and BIOS updates - I haven't touched my BIOS since I got the computer. What do BIOS updates actually help with, and is it safe / easy? Can anyone give me a guide? Thanks!
