HD disc format war is over. So now we can safetly invest in blue-ray drive. Acer has already made a 5920's version with blue-ray. Here is a proof: http://notebook.cz/clanky/recenze-notebook/2008/Acer-Aspire-5920G. They used Optiarc BC-5500A. So I suppose we can safetly say that this drive is fully compatible with older version of 5920 (like mine). And moreover it's not so expensive (unfortunately not cheap too). Some examples:

My Acer 7720 came with this exact same Blu-Ray drive in it and it works pretty good (I guess).

I've played a Blu-Ray sampler I got from Best Buy - and it played Ratatoui beautifully.

But it flat out refuses to play Close Encounters. I was notifed of a software upgrade to the arcade and I downloaded it with no better results.

So I am pretty much sure the drive is perfect, it's got to have something to do with the new profiles in Blu-Ray. Hopefully there will be a software update that will play everything.

Do the acer units that come without a Blu-Ray drive include the arcade software that plays Blu-Ray? Or do you need to use some other software?

I have to say that 5920 is perfect platform for blue-ray movies:

-8600M - h.264 (full hardware encoding) and vc-1 (partly hardware encoding - not full process. Still enough however, even for T5250 CPU). Most blue-ray movies uses h.264; vc-1 was more popular on hddvd.

    - realtek ALC888S - 7.1 audio support via hdmi (DTS HD, TrueHD - not sure but it is 7.1 so probably yes)

-720p screen for some mobile watching, and hdmi for true hd experience

So only think to buy is blue-ray drive ;) . Acer software supports hd disc.

    Isn't it greate? ;)
