    Hey ,

The title sums it up , the fan constantly turns on and off .

I'd rather have it on all the time on a low speed .

I updated to the latest chipset driver of Acers site with -overall .

I'm not sure if it happened in Vista as well since I moved to XP almost right away .

    Anyone solved it ?

This probly doesn't help you any, but I'm dual-booting my new 5920. vista and Ubuntu 7.10. I haven't messed with Ubuntu's power-saving settings at all. When the screensaver kicks in, the fan goes into a mode where it spins up every 20 seconds or so, then goes quiet again. Don't know whether it's stopping or idling. Sounds a lot like what you describe.
So maybe it has something to do with the power-saving modes? APCI or whatever it's called?

I'm not sure about the newer models but with some of the older laptop models, ones with an older version of eSettings, have an option to have the fan Always Enabled. This can either be a good thing or bad because you could either have a quiet fan running all the time or a loud one running all the time.

I've been trying to get the epower to work under XP but its hard to find the right combination .

So far I've managed to get it working with the help of this blog :
    http://komku.blogspot.com/2007/09/acer-empowering-technology-and-aspire.html

But the new E-power is useless as its nothing more then a pimped XP power setting , no help with fan speed or control .

This is a major bump in the Acer 5920 XP install , I'll try to keep you posted if I manage to find a solution .

on my old travelmate230 in programmes you have a notebook manager which lets you have the fan on constant.
my new aspire doesn't have this programme. :(
but i use a cooling pad so my cpu fan hardly ever runs.

    travelmate 230 running XPhome

Did you wipe vista and install XP?
I wonder if Speedfan would work? It's a pretty neat program, don't know how well it works with laptops.

SpeedFan can't control the fans of Acer laptops.

it doesn't annoy me that my fan goes on/off, as it's pretty darn quiet and I usually have some music playing on speakers or my headphones...but I will express some interest in this, because if I can have the fan running on a lower rpm on a consistent basis, I think I'd prefer that over the on/off that it is doing, like Gilo has mentioned.

there is an interesting device out there by Startech you may want to take advantage of. I saw it the other day, but alas, I forgot to keep a record of it and what it was called. but basically it hooks onto the exhaust port of your laptop and runs a fan all the time, which takes the load off the standard CPU fan. reading several reviews on either cnet or amazon gave it good marks for that job. just attaches to the exhaust port and a usb cable u plug in to power it. probably not a mobile solution, but definitely something to consider. :)

Mine Acer extensa 4220 has the same problem, it's really annoying and i can't really focus at night on my reading.

I tried to download some softwares (CPUidle, Speedfan, etc.) to adjust the fan and temperature control, but none of them worked!

I used the Everest to test my CPU temperature, the result is the fan was initiated when it reaches 46C and then stopped at 39C. The problem is my CPU temperature will rise to 46C even I do not open any program (while CPU usage is under 4%).

The Power option or fan speed adjusting function might be disabled by Acer, as i can't find that option in BIOS.

I thought to use some COoling Pad, but not really sure if it works, as my understanding is that the Cooling pad has 2 or 3 fans itself, right?

Now I'm thinking to change a Quiet Fan, but not sure if fans sold on eBay is compatible with Acer. :(

Hope some genius could solve this problem soon!!! ^____^

This software doesn't work with acer 5920G:/
Why don't you guys try RightMark CPU Clock util to set lower voltage, it will cool down CPU so that fun will run occasionaly.

Undervolting is a good idea but I'd rather have the fan work properly in the first place .

    I8kfangui is a great program , I wish it'd work with more notebooks .

guys, anohter thought is can we just replace the fan with a quieter one? My flatmate is using a IBM and its fan is working all the time but with a very low noise..barely can hear..

or is there any way to update the BIOS so that the Power/Fan option is available to adjust?

i will definitely never buy Acer again..teh cheapest laptop in the UK..

Which version of bios do you have? There is a fairly new one on acer's download center. It's v1.32. If you still don't have this, try flashing your bios, maybe this can solve the problem :)

Ok, i looked into the changelog, and it seems there is no change related to your problem. So i think there is one way left, you should contact acer, so they could fix it in a next version of bios.

New 3811 bios fix this problem partly. Fan runs constantly when you use maximum power of your system (for exemple stalker hehe) or when you do some basic tasks (internet, word).
