I just replaced the T5550 cpu with a T9500 (SLAYX) in my Acer Aspire 5920. I cleaned and applied Arctic Silver 5 to the cpu and gpu. It started right up, but now it seems like the cooling fan doesn't ever shut down. When the temp. hits about 55 deg C. (according to speedfan 4.39), the fan runs at full speed. With the T5550, it would need to reach about 65 deg before running full speed, but not for long.

    I have system BIOS v.1.3810

Is it possible that I did a poor job of applying the Arctic Silver 5? Any settings that I need to change for the fan to stop continuously running?

    Thanks.

It is OK for the fan to spin-up at 10ºC lower temps. I noticed that one too. Usually with my T5750 the fan kicks at 2nd gear around 52ºC, with T9500 (SLAYX too) it kicks at 40+ºC. Though I found strange your claim that it runs at full speed. Mine still has quite a lot of room to speed-up till it hit full speed. Maybe you should double check your thermal paste application. What are your idle temps, can you hear the fan? Mine is barely audible and my idle temp is 32ºC according to RM Clock (there is difference in the readings from one program to another).

Thanks, triturbo. Idle temp is 40 deg C. and the fan is at low speed, sometimes switching off. When the temp hits about 45, it constantly switches between low + medium. When it hits about 55, it's constantly switching between medium + high speeds. I guess I'm just not used to hearing the fan run so much at the higher speeds.

When the fan kicked in at high speed with the T5550, it would really blast some major heat out the back, hitting 70+ deg. It doesn't get anywhere near as hot with the T9500. And it's blazingly fast compared to the old cpu.

Is 40 deg. at idle considered hot? I have windows vista, acer empowering technology and kaspersky internet security running at startup.

I bought the T9500 (SLAYX) cpu as new on E-bay. It has the SLAYX marking on the top, but two different programs (CPU-Z & PC Wizard 2008) identify the cpu as a T9500 (ES). Is it possible I bought an ES cpu with a pretty SLAYX paint job? According to another post, ES cpus don't have five letters.

It is indeed possible to have faked CPU, but some ES CPUs are not very different from the production model. You have to check if the SLAYX sign is a sticker or something, just to make sure. Anyway, you can try to undervolt it :)

Thanks again, triturbo. Before installing RM Clock, my comp. shut down during the first stress test after 8 1/2 mins. It hit 84 deg. C. A second stress test shut it down after four mins. After testing with lower voltages, I'm set at 1.0125 v. in RM Clock and hit a max temp. of 76 deg. The next step down is .9500 volts & all steps below are at .9250 volts.
