My laptop Acer 5920G doesnt start up anymore. It happend when one day the screen froze and then when i restarted it , it just came up with a grey screen .
Now when i press the power button , the fans starts up and everything and the screen just comes grey sometimes with stripes on it . There is no actual sound eg. vista sound or anything but theres is sound coming from the fans. Once in a while it does boot up and 2 mins later the screen just completely freezes and then when restarted the grey screen thing just happens again.

BUMP
a little update - i got it to come on somehow yesterday and it worked like a charm for about 3 hours , however when i closed the laptop , it has gone back to bringing up the grey screen with a stripe on it again and wont boot. -
I think more than likely its the graphics chip, the nvidia bga chips seem to loose connection with the board. Happens on alot of laptops, ive seen the grayscreen on DV series hp's with the 8600m. Have you tried a external monitor yet?

Hmm interesting.
I dont think its the actual monitor because it works fine on an external monitor ( when it boots up , which is very rarely) but when it grey screens then it doesnt work with an external monitor.
I followed up what you said about the 8600m GS and I found that it is QUITE a common problem in HP laptops with this GPU , and they have a high failure rate. HP fixes this problem for free but i havent been able to find this problem with other acer users ( which may be partly because i have seen other 5920s with different graphics cards) . I dont think Acer has anything in place for this problem. Any ideas how to ring them up and go about mentioning this?
