Firstly, I want to know if all the acer 5920G's have one HD DVD model; the TS-L802A? Prior to confirming if there is only one HD DVD drive I upgraded the firmware to HP-21 for the TS-L802A as someone had posted on another thread. The max speed I could write ANY DVDR I tried (Verbatim, Memorex etc.) That ARE rated 16X was 4X. I've also tried AC06 and I get the same symptoms. I've tried several programs aswell, the one bundled with acer, nero, and imgburn. Every 10 seconds or so the device buffer goes down to 0% just for a split second then back up to 99% Also the drive sounds to rev up and down twice every 40 seconds or so. The speed fluctuates during writing, only reaching 4.0X at 25% staying at around 3.1, 3.2 for before 25%. It sometimes even drops down to 1.6. Does anyone know what this could be? Possibly a deffective drive? Problem with Windows? Sometimes it takes a REALLY long time to finalize a simple DVDR too, stuck at 'getting book type' it can take over a minute.

P.S. What does your Acer HD DVD drive SOUND like? Mine sounds unlike a regular DVD/CD Burner or player, it is louder and isn't a smooth sound like a regular one, it sounds like there's soft little revolutions constantly in the reading/burning.

it is indeed the TS-L802A...which you could have confirmed via the Device Manager, like I just did.

I've also found it only to burn at a maximum of 4x and alas, when you read the specs of the TS-L802A, it indeed only has a maximum burn of 4x for any DVD media format, but DVD-RAM, which is 3x. it's 16x for CD's and 10x for CD-RW.

edit - I haven't used my drive much, but I don't recall it sounding 'odd' at all.

well, I will make a note that the startup sounds of the drive can be a bit odd, different then what I hear from my PC, but the sound dampening and no doubt the way the drive is secured could be involved in that.

try doing some burn jobs and then read the discs for errors and such to see if there's anything really off the scale that points to something being wrong.

aside from that, I would say find someone else with a notebook and ask to hear how it sounds. if it's way off from yours, take it back to the point of purchase (after you backup your important files) and get it RMA'd.
