Hi guys - I'm new to Vista and have been trying to transfer all my old files etc. from my old XP laptop to my new Acer 5920. I have an ethernet cable (I think that's what it's called) - and yes it is the correct type because I've used it before to connect two computers together for gaming purposes.
I guess my question is: What's the most effective way to transfer these files? I don't have an external HD and I guess the files amount to maybe 10-15 GB. I figured I would try the "Easy File Transfer" wizard or whatever it is called, but the problem is that whenever I connect the two laptops, both of them say there is only "limited connectivity". I have tried repairing / diagnosing the problem but they won't fix it!
A few bits of info: I have Norton Internet Security trial running on my Acer 5920, and Norton Internet Security 2006 on my XP laptop. I've tried disabling the firewalls etc., with no success. In fact, my Acer 5920 doesn't recognise that it is connected to a network when I try to make it a "trusted" network.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. It seems like Vista lacks the old "Network Setup Wizard" that was in XP - made things a lot simpler. Also, does Acer eNet Management help at all - I've disabled that (along with Video Conference Manager).
Cheers guys!

Are they connected direct or through a switch? If connected direct then there's very limited chance it will work at all. If though a router make sure one is in the very end port and the other in any other port. Hopefully that will work!

1. This functionality may be no longer supported by Vista (even though that would be surprising since i think the communication is not on the network level that OS operate)
2. the cable may have been severed at some point in his history
3. the IP class from one/both computers may stop the TCP/IP communication (like both on automatic, or manual and different IP classes) - this is the most probable cause. Try to put both computers in same class (like 192.169.1.1 for one and 192.169.1.2 for the other, subnetmask 255.255.255.0, no DNS, no gateway). Also check for them to be in the same WorkGroup, i think for direct connection is a prerequisite. -
I'll certainly try that advice, although I'm not really sure how to mess with the IP addresses...
Regarding the cable, it is definitely the right one and it was working last weekend! I just can't seem to communicate between my two laptops. -
Unfortunately i don't have my Vista PC with me, so i cannot help you with precise steps (maybe some other forum member can assist). Something like
- right-click on Network Icon, choose Properties, pick Internet Protocol TCP/IP v4 - not v6
- select Properties
- now if its on Obtain an Ip address automatically (or something like that), pick use following address and enter the address specified by me
IF NOT and you have an address there, note it on a paper (and every other address there) cause u will have to put it back after you are finished.
- do the same with the other pc (on one use address ended with .1, and to the other with .2)
Apply and try
Very Important:you have an address there, note it on a paper (and every other address there) cause u will have to put it back after you are finished
