    Hey guys.
I am kind of frustrated with the DDR2 Performance that this machine pulls.
I might upgrade my Laptop to 3GB DDR2 RAM, and a different MXM Graphics card. (Type II)

Where can I get an MXM II card that will work on my laptop? I heard you need to flash, but I hear some models you don't and I have to take in the thermal into account.

    Can anyone help me?

I am looking to play Call of Duty 4, and so on.

is the X1900 compatible? I would rather get 8600M GT DDR3, but that might be too expensive.

Lots of memory certainly helps to keep things zipping along.

For a graphics upgrade, you could have a look in here.... http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/

but I think you need to be very careful matching the heat dissipation capability of your laptop with the demands of any new parts, assuming you can find cards that will fit and have a compatible bios.... :)

Good luck and do let us know how you get on :D !

Which card do you have currently ?

I dunno which GPUs your BIOS supports, but Acer provides the 9500M GS, 9600M GT, and the HD 3650 (probably MXM-II due to the 128-bit bus width), with its other notebooks. X1900 is MXM-III most probably due to the 256-bit bus width.

the 9600m gt is available on ebay right now.. though expensive.

you could also look for a ati mobility hd 3650 ddr3 which has better performance than the 8600m. MXM should not need a flash, they should be "plug and play"

    Ahh ok, I have a 8600M GT DDR2 256mb right now.
and call of duty 4 runs HORRIBLLY lol.

Maybe it's my processor? I have the T5250 as Andy knows. Also, 2GB ram.
I don't think the RAM would help playing COD4
however, Team Fortress 2, Day of Defeat Source plays fine at 16x CSAA 16x Antistropic 1280x800 with everything high with HDR at 50-60 fps.

    mxm-upgrade imo is overpriced.
i was looking at the 3650, they are around $170-180 in eBay.

    Wasn't there a $99.99 8600GT DDR3 by Asus?

8600M GT GDDR3 can be considered as a safe upgrade, if you can find one, as it might be supported by the BIOS.

IMO, the HD3650 is alot better, as it will run cooler, will perform better, esp the GDDR3 version. BIOS Support can be an issue, so whatever you buy, make sure you can get a refund in case of an incompatibility.

CPU upgrade will be a good idea, depending upon how much you can spend. Any CPU over 2.0GHz should be good.

Ah ok, will this benefit more FPS than the CPU Upgrade in cod4?

    With GPU upgrade ? Yes.
But COD4 is a FPS, so a fast CPU is also necessary. I thinks COD4's specs do require a 1.8GHz Dual Core Min., and a 2.4GHz Dual Core recommended.

i had a desktop (amd x2 4200+ 2gb ram x1950pro) that could play this in 1280x768 with 4x aa. isn't the cpu i have comparable? in PCMArk the x2 4200 was similar.

Checout COD's specs (I could be wrong with the figs). Upgrade whichever module you can find cheaper.
Though a GPU upgrade normally helps more in terms of gaming. I think the X1950 made up for the 4200+.
