For months when I press the Shut Down button on the start menu, the Aspire wouldn't shut down, so many times I've held the power button to shut it down. I knew this would eventually cause something bad to happen. Today, I held it again and when I turned it on, the screen where the Microsoft Corporation with the bar going across stayed longer than usual. I got a blue screen, and ever since, my system will not get past that bar screen. When I go to repair, it just shows a blank screen. I'm completley hopeless, and I don't know if Acer or Microsoft will be open on January 1, 2008.

I doubt it, but would a modded nVIDIA driver have anything to do with it even though I downloaded it 2-3 months ago? I'm trying to find a recovery CD, but is that my only hope? About the same time I forced the new driver, I did make a back up DVD(on 2 separate DVDs). I still haven't found them yet, but I can't even activate those DVDs because I can't get to the desktop at all. Again, the option to repair what's causing Windows from not coming up is not going anywhere.

I believe that I have an Acer 1 year warranty. Do I have to send it into them, or should I try to find a local vendor in the Carolinas or something? Does sending it to them see likely with this type of mess? Will they see the modded driver? Maybe I can make up some story about how a virus came and when I rebooted my computer, it appeared that the Acer driver was gone and when I turned it on again, a new driver came up(story of how a virus installed a faulty driver). I don't know, but I doubt that this driver change(which I highly doubt caused this as I've had no problems at all with it) will be noticed by them. Would they repair it, or send in a new laptop with the same HDD?

Why dont you boot using the dvds? Go to bios there change your boot first drive as dvd-ram drive. Then recover....

Your system not shutting down is an issue in all its own, you never investigated it? It could be number of things, did you apply the moded drive around the time the problem started?

I remember when I use to turn off my desktop using the power button, I've get the blue screen with the error "Unmountable boot volume." HP sent me a recovery disk, and all was well. I didn't lose any data. I'm sure something like this is an easy fix for Acer, I don't think they'll replace your entire computer just because of a blue screen. Since you're still within your warranty period, call tech support and hopefully they speak English and offer some helpful advice. Another thing to try is what the user above said - your backup disks. I believe pressing either F10 or F11 activates your CD ROM, if not you can edit the boot order in the BIOS to do so. If you're unable to locate your disks, Acer will send you them for a small fee(Maybe free, I have a Sony so I cannot be sure.)

I remember you bigspin, you suggested to me those months ago to get that new driver(remember, yahoo messenger, sri lanka, and how I thought that I wouldn't be able to install a new graphics driver and you helped me out with it) . Well I think the new driver prevented me from watching HD-DVDs. I somehow managed to play one, but "300" won't work. It keeps saying that I need to update, and I did, and a site came up, I downloaded it, and still the same thing came up where it said I needed to update, except this time the website didn't pop up. Could this new software update have caused my crash because it did say that a new hardware/software upgrade caused it. I don't see the nVIDIA driver causing it since it's been so long. I wanted to go back to the old Acer driver but I never felt the urgency to find those back up DVDs since my system was at least working.

I Should have investigated the shut down error, and even my friend said that it's not good for the CPU(forcefully shutting down a computer). I don't think that BestBuy carries these models anymore so no hope on that. I will try to find my recovery CD(and backup DVDs) tomorrow. If not, I will ask Acer. Still, I'm calling Acer first thing tomorrow early in the morning(when they aren't as busy) to try and fix this thing(though I will first get the DVD/CD unless they already have a solution). It's such a great laptop too! How do you get HD-DVD, 2 GB RAM, Core 2 Duo 1.5 Ghz(wish it was 2!), and an 8600m GT graphics card for $1099? I like Acer, but I hope that they can pull through with me on this failure.

I get to a screen that says "please wait a moment...." that never changes(it just stays at this screen. This laptop just won't get past certain stages. The CPU IS BUSY light flickers like crazy and then it goes dead and does nothing). MY mouse is also bigger than usual, which might hint that something is wrong with the Graphics driver maybe? That's what it looked like when I uninstalled the Acer driver way back. Can you give me a link that I can download a recovery DVD/CD(or even the drivers(original nVIDIA graphics oen specifically))?

Can someone at least answer this question as it might save me some time. 2-3 months ago I made a back up DVD that took up 2 DVDs. Right now I can't find those DVDs, but is there any way to activate those DVDs even though I can't to the desktop? How would I tell the computer to access the recovery process when I can't even get to Vista? I've been tearing my house apart looking for these DVDs, but is it still necessary?

Also, the Alt+F10, is that only for the recovery disc? On the Acer site, I have to pay $40 + $10 for shipping for the DVD. When I go to recovery, it just says Please Wait a Moment, the CPU IS BUSY light keeps flickering, and then it goes dead and I just see this screen and my mouse and nothing happens(I waited 1 hour).

Is the Recovery DVD the only option for me? How do I tell the laptop to recover it when I can't even get to the desktop?

Pressing F10 activates the recovery partition Acer includes, it does not require backup disks to work. Press F10 until you see the recovery screen.

Try here for the drivers: www.laptopvideo2go.com

If your built in recovery partition won't work, you might want to create a separate thread requesting someone upload the recovery disks. Hopefully those will work.

Good luck and sorry I wasn't able to help you more.

I just gave my laptop to the GeekSquad(for free). I'm hoping to get my laptop back soon. I couldn't get to windows because the Acer would get to a point where it would just totally stop(whether I did recovery(Alt+F10), repair, or normal startup). I still really like Acer, and I don't want to get another laptop because this laptop has it all: HD-DVD(didn't work, when I installed the new software it said I needed to play, it still wouldn't work, and could have caused my problems; was it because of a new graphcis driver(the HD-DVD not playing)?), 8600M GT, and something that I Didn't expect: HDMI. The flat panel market is heading towards HDMI, and I was delighted to see that this laptop had it. I could maybe exchange it for a Toshiba Qosmio(with HD-DVD), but I don't think it would have HDMI. I have faith in this laptop, once it comes back, I just hope that it behaves appropriately.

Sometimes FireFox wouldn't start if I clicked it while windows was booting up(maybe because the computer was busy). If it didn't come once, then no matter how many times I clicked it, it wouldn't come back. IE 7 worked no matter what though(I sometimes have to click it twice but it usually works). When the Firefox dilemna happened, the Shut Down button from the start menu wouldn't work, which caused me to hold down the power button which could have been hurting the laptop all along.
