    Hi people.

Just a quickie really. If I plug my laptop into my amp via hdmi (which is connected to the lcd via hdmi also) will I get Dolby Pro Logic, DTS etc.

Coz Im a little confused, as when you right click on the sound icon bottom right you get 3 options. One is lappy speakers, one is optical (but there is no optical out is there?) and thirdly there is hdmi.

So am i right in thinking that if i choose svideo i get optical for dolby and if i choose hdmi i get dolby over hdmi to my lcd?

    Thank you... :)

the speaker output can also output digital signals... i think you need a TOSLINK adapter

Simple question now being do i use hdmi for audio and video or do i use hdmi for video and spdif for audio,

look both the same to me...just save on a cable coming out of my lappy if hdmi does both...

i have no clue,,, but i thought HDMI was VIDEO ONLY.... or do some LCD MONITORS contain speakers that only need HDMI??

i'm totally uneducated in the area of newer monitor connectors.... (which are the same interface used by some HDTVs,, or am i wrong there too)...

IMO,, no analog audio signals can't send BETTER or even equlivant sound SOURCE quality as the DIGITAL signal... it just makes sense that wires can pickup interferance (a possibility anyway)... while using the OPTICAL cable,,, nothing can degrade the quality except the AMP and speakers you are playing the SOUNDS thru.

edit:: from reading this post i infered that HDMI does transfer audio... but unless the HDMI has OPTICAL CABLE for the audio... then it's not true DIGITAL like you get using a TOSLINK

Well hdmi is digital and carries all sources, so should work, will check tonight.
You get a better signal through hdmi, as it has a better bandwidth than spdif.
If you used optical for lets say ps3 to amp you would only get 5.1, if you used hdmi you would get everything up to and including dts hd master audio which is the best.

Well will try the hdmi tonight it should work a treat without the optical cable I am hoping.........

Well having played around with it it looks to me as though the hdmi output on the aspire 5920g only carries video (not what it says when you go into the configuration for the hdmi sound on the computer) as I cant get any sound whatsoever having plugged directly into my amps hdmi socket. I get a dam good picture and thats about it, anyone else no if im doing something wrong...

When you go into the config for the sound on the lappy, you cant even configure the spdif....

I can confirm that the HDMI cable does carry audio as I have had it work. You just have to also set the audio playback device as HDMI.

I have the HDMI cable from the laptop connected to my LCD monitor which in turn has its audio out connected to my amp.

Well I did change the playback to hdmi any yes i did get sound but not digital sound. It would only play in stereo.

Maybe i should try a different source on my amp as aux even though it shows a digital signal, im not getting any sound...

download the version for your model at support.acer-euro.com
and install that version. I'm guessing that it's the ONLYversion that will support what you need

Im using the one from the acer website and is Audio realtek v6.0.1.5400.

Have you tried connecting the HDMI cable to the tv and then connecting the audio out from the tv to the amp?

Also, go into the properties of the HDMI output through the windows sound panel and go to the 'supported formats' tab to see if the ones marked are supported by your amp. If your using one thats not supported, you will get no sound.

Another thing just to check if it is outputting sound; In my sound panel I have bars next the the output type and when I have set it as default and something is playing, for example music, the bars light up and fluctuate showing it is outputting sound. Do the bars next to our HDMI output light up?

    I will check?

Are you also saying that if i tick everything and just one of them is not supported by my amp, i will get no audio?

It could be a possibility. Just highlight each format one at a time and click the test button.

On a side note, just yesterday for some reason I couldnt get the audio to work over HDMI (I had linux temporarily installed so I think it messed it up a bit), so I reinstalled the driver and it was working again after a reset. It could be the driver for you.
