    Hello all,

I'm in the process of identifying my next laptop to replace my 4 year old aspire and have come across the i5 core 5740 and 5942...

Both have the same processor i5 520
Both have the same graphics card ATI 5650
    Both have a BD-ROM/DVD-RW

    But the 5740 i've seen at £700 and the 5942 at £940.

Apart from a slightly larger hard-drive, the media board instead of the number pad and the backlit keyboard. What else would does the 5942 have that would constitute a £240 difference?

I wonder where/if the 5942 will be available in the USA as I haven't seen it anywhere yet. I'd like to also look at that model and compare it to the 5740.

Newegg just raised the price on their 5740 by $50 to $849

In addition to what you've mentioned 5740 doesn't have: eSATA, Irda, ExpressCard, FireWire, Fingerprint-Reader and in most cases Bluetooth.
That's how Acer achieved bang for the buck price of 5740G- stripped it down of things that are not very usefull for most people but cost money (I for one have never used FireWire or PCMCIA/ExpressCard in my life).
If you need any additional ports you can always buy 5942, if you don't you don’t waste your money- I like the idea.

Ah, Now that makes more sense. Those are the kind of things that I wouldn't really look at in the specs. USB and HDMI are all the things I'd really look for with respect to external connections, and I've never used Irda, ExpressCard, Firewire or a fingerprint reader. eSATA I obviously haven't used as my laptop is so old.

Shame. I like the sound of the media pad and backlit keyboard. But it looks like it's the 5740 for me.

I like the eSATA in 5942G but it looks like I'm gonna buy 5740G too.
I've been to a store lately and inspected at least four 5740G units and for all I've seen I can confirm what had been already reported on forums and that is the quality seems good.

My wife has the 5738 (after getting rid of an 8 month old sony laptop) and I do like the looks of it... I just want that little extra power for a bit of gaming
