    Hi guys,

I was listening to some music yesterday night, then suddenly my laptop decided to shut down. No problem I thought, becaus it happened 2 times before in which I only had to start the laptop. This time however, the laptop does not want to turn on.

I tried turning it on with the battery, and without the battery(with the adapter plugged in). Nothing helps.

Also I have noticed that the light bulb on the adapter blok blinks if it is plugged into the laptop, but just normally doesnt blink when i pull the adapter out of the laptop(with or without battery).

What can be the problem, and what can I do about it?

    Thanks in advance.

The laptop was running on the adapter+battery at the time it shutdown. I'm not 100% sure though, why?

Why should it matter, seeing as the bulb flashes even when the battery is out of the laptop?

The adapter LED flashing is a fault indication.

Greatest probablity when this happens is that either

    1) The adapter failed, it is telling you it has failed . . it may have failed a while before and the laptop ran on until the battery emptied.
In this situation there is now no power to boot from battery or adapter. But the problem is easy to prove (borrow adapter) or fix (buy new adapter)

    2) There is a motherboard fault (e.g. short circuit or failed regulator) which has affected both AC and battery power inputs causing the AC adapter to shut down or fail and blowing/tripping the battery protection. Once the adapter protection circuit trips it usually flashes until the mains supply and the lead to the laptop are both disconnected for a few seconds and then re connected to the mains first. Note that this may reset a faulty adapter which still shuts down when next asked for power.

So from a diagnosis point of view the failure to boot with a battery supply is pretty critical . . but you would need to know if the battery you were trying to boot with was charged above 10%

OR it may be something else although I have not seen a BIOS problem affect the adapter on Acers (can be different where there is a 3rd data pin to the adapter)

Alright, so what can I do? I have no warranty left=s.

The led stops flashing if i disconnect it from the laptop. Oh and im 100% sure the battery was above 90%, seeing as I always put it on the adapter.

I was planning to buy a computer either way, but I wanted to keep this laptop.

    Urghhhhhh:s.

You need to work out what's the problem.

Assuming you are right on the battery I would think there is a fault with the power circuits in the laptop. . . but that is no substitute for examining and testing it

But first and foremost get yourself a USB Caddy for a laptop hard drive (Check if your laptop has SATA or IDE) so you can remove the HDD, put it in the caddy and back your files up to another PC or copy to a new laptop

Then, Regarding the fault : it is probably fairly low-tech so a laptop repair shop may be able to quickly find the problem - and possibly fix it without needing a new board. May be worth a try before or instead of resorting to putting it on ebay for spares (e.g. Screen, keyboard, case etc will all have some value)

Today, I have removed the hard disks, the video card and the ram cards. I want to remove the processor to check if thats the faulty hardware.

    Thanks for your help btw!

    hi
let the adaptor reset buy unplugging it from the wall socket for 5 min and reconnect it to the laptop to see if it charges. it happened to me aswell because the adaptor overheated.
