Ok so heres the deal, i've had my 6920G for a better part of 3 years now and not once did i open up to clean it by removing dust in those 3 years. A few months ago (can't remember how long) i was trying to play a flash game on my browser with low CPU Usage. Most players only used about 15% CPU Usage when playing the same game (mind you this Flash Game did not use up too much in terms of graphics). So i'm here playing it and i was using about 50%-75% CPU Usage (on high performance) when playing the Flash Game so it was obviously effecting my performance. One player suggested I open up and completely cleaned out my 6920G from any potential dust. After opening it i was surprised not to find too much dust. Some vents were clogged but it didn't look that bad.

Anyways cleaned it up and decided to apply some Arctic Silver 5. To make the long story short before i opened it up and cleaned it, i was always on High Performance without my laptop shutting down automatically. Now i have to be in Power Saver Mode or else it shuts off when the temps get too hot. Now heres the next kicker. I'm playing Age of Empires Online at 1920 x 1200 for hours on Power Saver Mode without problems. But when i wanted to start playing Civ 4 again i can't play more than like 30 mins before my laptop shuts off.

I downloaded Core Temps and it register temps (in High Performance) of 25C on idle and around 60C-70C+ just for going to the home page of Youtube. I redid the Thermal Compound about 2-3 times those few months ago and would like to try again but i do not know if i'm putting too much or too little or if it is something else. The CPU is so tiny so it makes it a little hard for me to spread out the Thermal Compound and i do not know if i'm putting the correct amount on. I know Arctic Silver says to use about a Grain of Uncooked Rice or about the thickness of a Paper Sheet but it is a little hard for me to measure and see if i'm putting on the correct amount.

Perhaps maybe it is something else? I notice the fan spins so that can't be the problem.

Anyways any help is gladly appreciated.

whats the temp on the gpu? did you re-paste that one also?
if it;s shutting down after the re-paste then you did something wrong

Also did your laptop had thermal pads and you remove them?
(the chipset sometimes has thermal pads and people remove them and use thermal paste and that is not a good idea unless the thermal paste is thick)

To the best of my knowledge all i did was clean out all the dust and cleaned the heatsink and removed the old thermal and applied new thermal paste. I'm pretty sure i did not even notice where the thermal pads are let alone remove them. As far as the GPU i don't think i even was able to see where that was .

You must have not only seen the GPU but also you must have removed its radiator as CPU and GPU have a common radiator so you can't remove one without removing the other.

I dismantled 6920G a while ago and I made a photo (sorry for the quality)
I marked what's under which heatsink.

hmm after looking at that pic i may have done the GPU and maybe not the CPU (i don't remember). Anyways i'll go back in there later today and try again by repasting both the CPU and the GPU. I'll keep you guys posted. Hopefully it will be fine this time.

sometimes, a damaged heatsink increases temperature. Check yours

Ok so i just got gone. First thing i noticed was the pipes on the heatsink they are slightly bent and i bent them just now to try and straighten them up. I don't think they were that badly bent so i don't think they will prevent flow of air. Anyways i redid the Thermal Paste on the CPU and GPU, this time only applying very little. Also this time i put the thermal onto the tip of the Credit Card to get a better measurement as last time i was putting the paste on the actual CPU and GPU. I also double checked the fan to make sure it was working as i left the lid uncover and turned on the laptop to make sure the fan was spinning which it was. Anyways i loaded up Windows 7 and checked with Core Temps.

First thing i noticed was my min temp (or idle) dropped by a good 5C-10C so right away i was happy. It is measuring 16C Min on Core 0 and 13C on Core 1 (over my 20C-22C before). Next thing i did was go to the home page of youtube and saw no 70C spike like before. So finally i booted up Age of Empires. Right now the Max Temp that Core Temp has registered is 43C on Core 0 and 47C on Core 1 (use to give 74C-77C as highest) so i basically just dropped my temp by a whopping 30C-35C.

Now i can run High Performance Mode again. So thanks guys for all your help. I guess i was just putting on way too much before (even though i thought i was putting an okay amount that looked fine to my eyes.
