My 6920G went down a few days ago, I sent it to local computer store to have it diagnosed. It turned out that they say it is a mobo issue and said that it would cost aroun 400 to get a new mobo + labour fee.

I don't have any warranty on theis laptop, and the 1 year warranty by the manufacturer has expired. I am just wondering if I can order the mobo fron Acer and maybe replace it on my own.... I don't know which would be better, to have the guys at the store do it for me or phone Acer....

    Help!

I am also suspicious that it might be just the video card that is broken...

the problem is that I am not getting any display when I try to turn on the computer. Fan and power supply is all working fine and there are no wierd noises. the guy at the store puged it on to another monitor and does not get anything either.
Now the computer shuts down a few seconds after I press the power button and restarts on its own....but it does not shut down on its own again after the restart.

Be patient - we're a forum, so people can take a while to see your post and respond to it.

I don't believe Acer handles replacement part sales, but they might be able to take care of the repair themselves. Not under warranty, of course, but they might be cheaper than this other store.

There is AcerParts.com, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're more expensive.

It is theoretically possible that the GPU is toast, but there should be other symptoms to signal that. Does the system make any beeps on boot-up?

It sounds like they have eliminated non MB causes and not looked a lot further. If they said what part was defective or liquid damage beyond repair etc I would be a little more confident the MB actually merits replacement rather than repair

Proprietary acer parts do seem to be priced about 3x what you might hope or expect. There are a number of 'acer parts' vendors on line and sometimes one is cheaper than the others. Perhaps this forum should 'adopt one' in exchange for a discount ??

There are some refurbished 6920G MB's around for around $150 - 200 but obviously you are taking a chance on these.

Most laptop repair shops sadly do not attempt component level MB repairs unless they are already 100% of the cause /cure. Such repairs can be time consuming /expensive, require specialised equipment /skilled staff and the customer wont pay for all that if it isn't then fixed. Main exceptions are BIOS battery swaps, Power and USB connector resoldering/glueing. Fuse /Power capacitor replacement and GPU reflowing at customers risk.

The process in most cases (no names here!) seems to be
    1) Rule out software by restore (max 30 mins : 30% of faults now fixed)
    2) Rule out/replace peripheral/removable components like screen/Keyboard/HDD/WiFi/RAM/CPU/FAN/Cooling/Adapter/Speakers etc (max 30 Mins ( 80% of faults now fixed or found)
    3) OK, 0.5 - 1 hours labour . . Hopefully a result and a good profit.
But if no result they are looking at diminishing returns. SO: Quote for new MB as
    a) after 1 and 2 this will fix it
    b) Can quote several more hours labour so still profitable overall from those who say yes despite those who say 'right give it back then'

Just beware : several distributors will not send expensive MB's to non professional customers because of expectations of support, hi-jinx over returning defective ones etc etc

Laptop insurance (especially with accidental damage included) can therefore actually be worth it if a screen or MB fault/damage occurs on an expensive system. But of course it will never happen once you have paid out :)

And Getting a price from appointed ACER warranty repair centre is a good plan. They will have access to board re-work and probably parts a a reasonable cost

At least in the US and Canada, Acer will perform an out of warranty repair at a flat rate of $199.

Have you tried to unplug AC and take out the battery, then press the power on button for 30 second? That thing happened to me and my sister some time and that was a way we recovered it. I read it was a static issue

Which I think is extremely reasonable. (especially if one has the knowledge to have ruled out the cheap things already :)

Hi..your message raised my hopes of gettin my laptop back..but I also have a problem..SNID underneath is completely scratched and I can't see a single number, this is stopping me from getting onto a call with acer customer service representative..my only hope is that I have registered my laptop when purchased but have no idea how to retrieve SNID..also I had my battery replace for free within the warranty.

If you've still got the Acer Empowering Framework on your system, one of the programs should display your serial number - might be eSettings.

SNID is also written on the box the laptop came in - usually below the serial number.

(Next time take a high res scan of the bottom to capture all the serial numbers, versions, windows keys etc in one)
