Just picked up a new Acer 6920G-6968 a couple of days ago and have a couple of questions.

Thought I would run disc cleanup and defrag. When I bring up disc cleanup, it shows some big files such as Hibernation File Cleaner (2.99gb), System error memory dump files (278MB).

Is it ok to include these files when I run disc cleanup?

Also could someone explain Acer Empowering Technology? I tried to delete it, thinking it was bloatware, but it will not delete.

Finally, there is a program folder called Big Kahuna Reef. I kept getting a warning that it contained a virus, so I deleted it. But the program file is still in program files.

    Many thanks

If you delete the hibernation file, you will have a very difficult time re-enabling hibernation in the future should you need/want to.

    1. Hibernation File Cleaner -if you want to use Vista's hibernation options do NOT delete this file. Read here.
    2. System error memory dump files - almost 300MB error dump files? You bought this laptop new or used? Such quantity of dump files mean A LOT of error must have occurred on this laptop. Back to your question - yes, you can delete the dump files, it's safe.
    3. Acer eSoftware - if you don't want to use it then uninstall it(Control Panel->Programs And Features). The Empowering Software is just a packet of tools - power option, encryption, network etc...
    4. Big Kahuna Ree - this should be a game right? The virus warning was possible a false positive. Anyway you can uninstall this program from the Control Panel->Programs And Features too.

Thank you both for your excellent responses. I am glad I asked first.

@ATG. I did buy it as a new machine with full warranty and a 30 day "no questions asked" store return policy. But it was an open box item, on clearance and I was told the first purchaser had returned it after 14 days and there was nothing wrong with it. I am beginning to think there was reason he returned it.

I have not had any problems with it so far and it seems to be running stable.

Another quickie question. My laptop came with Vista and I was thinking of switching to XP. Does anyone know if that might cause any issues and would it have any impact on the Acer 12 month warranty.

    Many thanks

@Blairgowrie: make acer recovery discs (many topics in this forum), single/dual boot xp and or vista and use. if real big problems, use recovery discs to fully restore lappy to factory for returning (backup your own stuff first of course).
all drivers are available for xp32 and i dual boot that for games.

Appreciate your response dazzacbr. I made the 2 dvd recovery discs and have them safely tucked away. Not sure what you mean about single/dual boot though? Could you explain please?

when i first got my laptop i got a lot of errors, especially with the first release of firefox 3 and the original set of video drivers that came with the laptop. Updating firefox fixed the firefox issues, which caused A LOT of crashes, and updating the video drivers fixed that problem too.

maybe its possible the original owner encountered these problems, got fed up, and just decided to return the laptop not knowing it wasnt really the laptop at fault

I am beginning to think it was something like that camote. As I understand it, you can only run the recovery discs once so he obviously didn't do that.
