Hi,
I've recently upgraded my 6930G to 4GB RAM as well as a 320GB & I decided to install Windows 7 64 bit RC instead of Vista.
I tried a test installation which went OK, with only 2 devices listed as requiring drivers to be installed are the Infra Red Device (which is listed as unknown device in Device Manager) and the fingerprint scanner.
What I was hoping is whether someone out there who's already installed Windows 7 RC and could help me with a guide for what other drivers should be installed, e.g. Chip set, ACHI etc. and whether they need to be installed in any particular order when it comes to installing for 'real'?
I noticed as well that the Acer empowering software was not compatable with Windows 7 (even in compatability mode), but am not sure whether this is any big deal?!
Thanks,
Phill

You Need To Download The Vista X64 Home Prem Drivers For The Empowering Soft Dont Forget To Rub Them As Vista Compatible

For the ACHI stuff, it's not really necessary I've noticed. Not unless you have an SSD or something that can break the 1.5gbps SATA barrier. The drivers from the Intel site worked for me, and brought my speeds up to SATA2. No particular order necessary.
What you might want to install also is the Intel Matrix Storage Manager as well from Intel. I found that iaStor was screwing with my install a bit, making my computer do weird freezing etc.
Synaptics drivers are also recommended, as although all the default Windows touchpad stuff works, it's missing some of the sensitivity settings etc.
I also installed Realtek 2.35 HD Audio stuff.
Did not install any of the aids known as Acer eTrash. It's a pile of bloatware and I think it needs to be burned to the ashes. -
You both must be mind readers! I was just about to ask the question again re: drivers, as I've just received Windows 7.
Again, a fresh installation only fails to find drivers for the CIR (Infra Red), which shows up as 'unknown device'. As well as the driver for the fingerprint scanner.
I used the drivers from Acer's website for these devices, but don't think I'll use the current version of the Upek driver as it made me have a BIOS password set up. And you can guess what I did?!!! Cue lots of cursing anyway. The older version works great though.
Anyway, Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 also has had problems during installation due to 'driver compatability'. Ususally an update of Kaspersky sorted this out, but not lately. Kaspersky 2010 works O.K.
So, back to the new installation!
After Windows 7 has done its bit, am I right in thinking the order of driver installation should be:
1: Chipset
2: AHCI (If used)
3: Turbo Memory (again, not too sure about this one)
4: Graphics
5: Audio
6: Other devices
I'd usually put Kaspersky on before going online to perform a Windows update.
Drivers for the Atheros AR8121, AR8113, AR8114 (?) are available through Windows Update. Can't find them via Acer though.
Thanks for your replies,
Phill
