    Hi there guys :)
I'm really not having much luck with this laptop at the moment...
One or two of you may have seen I posted a thread about my laptop idling at 95C, but now I have a bigger problem, and it's with Rundll32.exe

Now, before I start, I do not have Nero Installed and I have deleted literally every file I downloaded from yesterday to see if I had a corrupted file messing with my system.

Anyway, since yesterday (After trying to clean my laptop fan up), I've been turning my laptop on, and one of 3 things have been happening:

    1) The Laptop gets to the login screen (after 15 mins) and freezes out, and will not respond to anything

    2) I log in, but then the entire desktop stops working, no error message, but I can't click Start, Ctrl Alt Delete doesn't work, and after a good 45mins I get a Security error.

    3) This is the most common one, I log in, my wireless just manages to ask me for additional details to log into my uni network, and I get RunDll32 has stopped working, so I let it try and find a solution, but it freezes mid process, and nothing works at all, the clock freezes, the battery meter freezes, the touch pad for the mouse freeezes (although I can still use the mouse?) and I have to turn it off via the power button.

Anyway, I'm currently running this laptop in safe mode, because it is the only way I can get it to work.

I took someone's advice online and did a sfcscannow on the command line, it has come back saying that I have got Corrupted files and that windows cannot repair them.

So, Onto AVG I go, which does a Command Line virus scan...
1 hour later, it emerges that my laptop has got getting on for 75 locked files, ranging from my pictures, all the way to my program data.

So I go back to the Scannow results, which gives me a path to go and find the names of the files that are corrupted, and here's where things get really confusing...

The File doesn't exist (I think)...

It says to look for CBS.log, but I can find it, instead I have found a number of txt files with the same name, I would upload them to show you all, but they're totalling way over 60MB, so it's kinda out of the question.

I have also tried the MSConfig, to disable the windows features at startup, however, the same error (amazingly) occured

Does this mean my laptop is well and truly shot? It is still under warranty, but I really don't want to go through the process of getting my music again (I actually can't, because my Ipod is broken, out of power and won't charge)

Or am I missing something here?

Any Help would be Greatly Appreciated

    Cheers
    Jon

I just want to add one more thing:
I thought I'd try a system defrag, but it will not load up, so I tried it from the command line, and the report for volume <null> PQSERVICE says the fragmentation level is 82%, I'm no computer whizz, but I'm assuming thats pretty bad news, not sure if it's any use to any of you with a solution :)

    Hi,

I'd try to boot from a live Linux CD like Ubuntu to backup your music (hopefully not DRM protected) and other data.

Then I'd restore the laptop to factory preinstall and see if this solves the problem.

Or try one of Windows 7 repair options you are given after hitting F8.
Defragmentation does not help at all with such problems btw. ;)

    Hey Michael,
New one for you, rundll is still not working, but my laptop has mysteriously started working?
Anything that did cause the laptop to crash is now running smoothly :S
    Any Ideas?

Did you try to restore the laptop to a point in the past? Because that will delete any installation you did, and maybe you can try to install the programs one by one every day so you can find out which installation does the rundll failure.

    Hey Bo0bz,
Yes, I have attempted 3 system restores to find the culprit, I restored it back a month (I was attempting to run an undervoltage to stop my laptop idling at 90c) so that the programs I installed and downloaded were all uninstalled, but the restore failed twice in safe mode, this third one has worked, but rundll is still crashing, and the laptop is still working without it :S
