    Realtek HD audio

Acer 7720 Refurb from buy.com purchased in December. Speedfan reports Core 1 @ 46C. When I first got the machine it would seem to randomly shut off at times. I figured out this was because the machine was overheating. I opened the machine and very curiously found a layer of thin plastic over the GPU.

Having never seen thin plastic used a heat transfer material I removed the plastic on the GPU, along with the two thermal pads and installed arctic silver paste. Since removing the pads and plastic the machine does not shut itself down however, in windows xp audio still distorts when cpu temps reach 48C which is quite often. Audio heavily lags and or has crackling pop sounds.

Like I said in vista it's worse and I have read of problems with the realtek HD audio in xp. I installed the HD audio framework first from MS then the realtek driver, this is suppose to help with the distorted sound.

The cpu fan seems to turn on when it wants. Is 47C a high idle temp for a mobile processor? I thought I read somewhere the max temp is 90C. Also there is this 'Temp1' sensor that is always at 45-50C. Maybe the temps just aren't high enough for the fan to kick in, and or maybe the realtek HD is really sensitive to any temp increase.

If all else fails I'll just buy a cheap usb sound card on ebay that hopefully will not distort audio.

The audio distorts heavily in windows vista, like a crackling sound.
