I wonder if anyone out there can help me?

Does anyone know which is the better notebook?

I have just bought the Acer 1714SMi but had to return it because of a few issues which has made me a bit cautious about getting a replacement.

The laptop is to be used mainly for web development such as IIS, MS SQL Server, Dreamweaver, etc... but also I would like to play games such as UT2004.

Does anybody have any benchmarks to compare the Centrino 2Ghz Dothan to the Pentium 4 3.4Ghz such as AquaMark 3D as the CPU score I got on the 1714SMi was 9179 the GPU score wasn't that great with the nVidia GeForce FX Go5700.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hexus.net does have a comparison of the GeForce FX Go5700 and the Mobility Radeon 9600.

    http://www.hexus.net/content/reviews/review.php?dXJsX3Jldmlld19JRD03NjImdXJsX3BhZ2U9MQ==

I would guess that the Radeon 9700 would run about as fast as the Go5700 without its shader problems, but it's hard to say.

I found some benchmarks one of the initial travelmate 8000 series dothan test notebooks.

I don't know how these scores would compare to a retail 8006lmi, but the 2.0GHz dothan seems to give about a 10% boost to performance. The Aquamark 3D CPU score would definitely be higher.

I can also tell you that my 8006lmi is freakin awesome. I'm sure at some point a notebook with half the weight and four times the battery life would come in handy too.

Thanks for the info, it is much appreciated. Could you please tell me if your hard drive has a habbit of powering down when you are using it.

It's just I just had to return my Acer 1714SMi because the system kept pausing/hanging then would resume once the hard drive spinned back into life which was really annoying. Have you experience any hiccups with your system at all?

Is the drive really a 5400 rpm and not a 7200, I'm very supprised at that.

Could you please tell me what the size and type of memory is, because I am getting mixed views. The memory in the 1714 was desktop ddr333, I would have probably popped in my 1gb of Cosair if it wasn't for the welded on heatsinks which meant there was no room.

I would love to purchase 1gb of high performance ram straight away if there is any out there to buy.

I haven't had any problems with the hard drive turning on and off. It does turn off automatically when I haven't used the it for like half an hour, but it starts up again in like five seconds.
I just found out that the hard drive is actually 4200RPM. That's standard for a laptop size hard drive.
The memory is laptop sodimm ddr333. Only one of them is removable, however. I think you have to get a special acer replacement part to upgrade the other one. That's the only thing I don't really like about my laptop. You could get a single 512Mb stick for about $100 or a 1024Mb one for $300 which would put it at 768 or 1280Mb total respectively. I don't know if there is any specified high performance ram for laptops. They are mostly CAS Latency 2.5.

Thanks for that, but I am still stuck, decisions, decisions.

    Centrino 2Ghz vs Pentium 4 3.4Ghz

ATi Radeon 9700 Mobility vs nVidia GeForce FX Go5700

    512Mb vs 1Gb

    80Gb 4200 vs 120Gb 7200

    15" vs 17"

Mind you when you put in a list like that I think its clear as crystal unless somebody out there knows different.

I also forgot that the Intel 865G chipset supports dual channel memory and because the 1714 can take ddr333/ddr400 184 pin memory it should be a lot easier to get compatible high performance ddr400 memory.
