    Hi

Just recieved my 8204 today, build 0603, and there are no problems. But I'm wondering why the screen goes black for a sec just after the desktop appears for the first time. It appears to coincide with ATI loading up. O, and is there any real use to keeping all this empowing stuff around? And finally, is there a free way to merge the C and D hard drive?

    Thanks

i can only awnser the last question and that is.
    A. Reinstall Windows making the partitions together also cleaning up the whole system by 15% or so.
    B. Search google for the program PartitionMagic or some sort.

It isn't senseless - for many people it is the better solution.

jaad75 is very right and very diplomatic

I am not (diplomatic). It's STUPID to merge the partitions!
Separate system and data partitions have many advantages in terms of backing up and restore.
You only have to back up your system partition once in a while (when everything is running smoothly); having a separate partition allows an easy partition restore in case you really crash.
The data partition probably needs more regular (at least regular incremental) backups.
Wiping it all together just creates a mess.

    but it's your choice

    The black screen?
I don't have it,but my guess would be that the system first applies the system settings and then the user settings which may require a change of resolution.

    Empowering stuff?
Again personal preferences. Do you need it?
There are contradictory messages that some are buggy (though I didn't have any problems when I was using them straight out of the box)
Personaly I only use the Launchmanager (for some of the keys), but even there windows can handlemost of these itself.
    Alternatives?
Windows itself and notebook hardware control do whatever you need in terms of power management.
The only one I am not sure about is GraviSense (don't know if the e thingy needs to be installed for it to work)

The screen going black is "Acer Empowering Technology" loading. I've left the Acer stuff intact - it takes 30 seconds longer to load, but my system is fast and runs well - "if it ain't broke......" works for me. Many users here have advised deleting much of the Acer software, and a search of the forums will direct you to discussions in this.

Bringing up partitioning is like discussing religion or politics in forums! You'll get fervent proponents of either, and in the end, it's what works for you and your individual needs. I find partitioning unnecessary, so for me, I merged C: and D: partitions using Partition Magic (you can find cheap OEM versions for ~ $18 via pricegrabber.com), and it's fast and easy, only takes 5 minutes to merge the 2 partitions.

Yep, although I've noticed something. All the people who happily admit that no solution is right for everybody are the same people who say that they favor *not* partitioning. All the people who insist that there is only one right answer and that everybody who claims otherwise must be the devil ;) is on the side that favors partitioning.

Personally, I find more disadvantage than advantage to partitioning - but I recognize that for *some* people it is the better solution.

I favor partitioning, and would advise considering it, thus my strong remark above). But in another exchange on another forum a contributer named gweilo8888 had a few arguments why partitionign didn't make sense for him/her.
So at this moment my remark would not be as strong as above, but still in favour of partitoning plus indicating that one should make up their onw mind.

Thus this make me the master of the universe, both covering the devil and the heavens?

    Cheers

THe black screen may also be ATI graphics drivers, I know NVidia graphics drivers cause the screen to go black for a second during bootup while they are initialized (don't ask me for technical details, I don't know).
