    Hey everyone,

My Acer 8204 laptop runs really hot! That's all there really is to it. I mean, I know it's summer, but this is kind of crazy. It idles at around 60C (cpu) and 40C (hdd). It didn't used to run this hot, so I dont know what gives.

I checked the fan and it has no dust in it at all.

When running cpu intensive programs, the cpu gets to 75 or 80, and the hdd gets to 45 or so.

I made a laptop cooler which effectively reduces the cpu to under 50 no matter what the load, and hdd to under 35 no matter what load, but I can't have it with me when portable.

So what do I do? I dont want to take the heatsink off and put thermal paste because I dont want to void the warranty, but at the same time I dont want to send it in to Acer service...

I notice that when the fan speeds up a lot at above 70C, I still dont feel much air coming out of the side at all. Airflow is pretty weak all the time actually. I know the fan won't blow a huge amount out but I can barely feel it on my hand even when its spinning all out.

    suggestions?

HAhaha sorry about this one..I need to look closer next time!

I took my laptop apart again, and opened the conveniently placed fan case. I looked inside and saw nothing. Looked a little closer and saw about 1/4" of dust and hair completely covering the heatsink! It runs very cool now no matter what I do, no cooler needed.

Now here's a question about when I took it apart...

The fan just kind of popped out of the magnet/coil thing that it goes around. From my experience, they usually have a plastic clip at the end of the shaft in a little groove. This shaft had a groove on it, but it came out way too easily to have had a clip on there...I think. Could something catastrophic happen if there was a clip that broke off?

why is that cause to get a new cpu fan?

The plastic fan housing with the magnet, fan blades, and metal shaft going down the center was easily removed from the rest of the fan (coils and frame). The fan blade part is held onto the rest by the magnetic force...

I just noticed though, that most other 80mm fans I have owned have used a plastic clip that attaches to the shaft on the other side.

a c clip to be exacted

Yes its just a much more compact version of that.

I took it apart again and looked inside very closely with a flashlight. The shaft on the fan does not even go all the way through, and there is a ball shaped thing at the end, it sort of sits in a little socket in the center of the coils.

Anyway I dont think it will be a problem now. There is a metal plate to hold the fan up against the housing, and the magnets are plenty strong.

    Thanks
