    Computer:
    Acer Travelmate 8204wlmi
    200Gb/7200rpm
    4Gb 667Mhz ram...

    Hi. I've tried to solve this question for a long time using google etc.

    I just upgraded laptop hd from 120Gb/5400rpm -> 200gb/7200rpm with ease. I also added more memory, from 2x 1Gb 553Mhz -> 2x 2Gb 667Mhz.

    Ok. Here's the problem. Bios (v. 1.3517) won't recognise nothing more than 3069 Mb memory. However Vista Ultimate lies that it recognises full 4gb.

    Is there any bios which supports full 4Gb?

    Has anyone got 4Gb to work on this laptop? There are people who has 4Gb working on their computer (i think) .. at least it's on their signature.. i wonder how they got it to work.

    Thanks.

    its not the BIOS, its most likely your chipset limiting the 4gb

    Everest ultimate says this chipset (intel i945PM) can run max 4Gb.. at least memory speed (667 Mhz) works correctly. I also checked that with everest before upgrading.

    I hope someone with tm 8204 who's got 4Gb running (if it's possible) could say his/her opinion..

    thanks for the replys

    945 can deal with 4GB installed but you have to start deducting from the total memory address space, all the devices that require memory addresses as well. My 945 chipset shows only 3318MB available. I have a desktop 945 chipset (Asus P5LD2) with 4GB installed under XP and it only shows approx 2.8GB available.

    Hi, Sorry new to the forum, I have an Acer TravelMate 8210, I have just installed 4GB Ram in it which was as per the Machine's Max Memory Specs and have installed Vista 64Bit Ultimate. However the BIOS and Vista are still only reporting 3GB. Acer's response eventual was:

    "With in your machine you have the Intel 945PM Chipset. This supports the use of 4GB of RAM but does not support memory remapping, which is the reason for only showing 3GB within windows and also the BIOS."

    Basically although the Processor is 64Bit ready and the motherbord apparently supports 4GB unless re-mapping is enabled on the chipset and the BIOS you can't use it. Apparently Gateway is or has been invoved in legal action arsing from this kind of apparent mis-selling see. https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=13524907&postID=5468919407648645403

    All I can say is regardless of what the marketing bumphstates make sure that you buy your machine from the manufacturer with the OS and the amount of RAM you need and don't assume you can upgrade it later because the 32Bit to 64 bit switch is not always going to work.
