I had planned on testing out the one in the store but unfortunately they didnt have it on display. They only had the 16" model on display, I didnt know about the resolution issue until a little while ago when i stumbled upon this while doing a search on google for some additional info. According to Micro Center's website they have 7 of the 8920-6837 in stock and 5 of the 16" model. I planned on paying for the 8920-6837 on this coming Thursday and doing the in-store pick-up, and after reading this entire thread I'm not leaving there unless they check the model number
-
Seriously, I wasted a week going through Micro Center to figure out if they have any 8920's with 1080p resolution. The answer was that they checked every store and every warehouse, and they don't have any 8920's with 1080p. For $150 more, the Best Buy here in Boca has 1080p 8920's, but they are lacking some things like Bluetooth, and their stock is very low. They are waiting for a shipment from Acer.
Micro Center is dealing with Acer on this issue, and it doesn't seem like there will be a resolution anytime soon. -
I'm set on buying it Thursday, so since I probably won't get that exact one they will exchange it when they get the proper models in stock? -
-
hopefully all goes well -
-
I went to Micro Center today to see if they still had any of the 7 that were supposed to be in stock. After 3 employees looking for the boxes for around 30 minutes they finally came to the conclusion that they were all sent back because of the issue. Then they tried to sell me a more expensive HP laptop. I left and ordered it from Amazon.com with the 2-day shipping, so they will ship it out in 2-3 weeks when they get more. I'm really excited about it, now im trying to find a case or backpack i can put it in that i can use for school as well.

Ok, I read the first 6 pages and then decided to just skip and post.
I work in management for a big box store in Canada. ie: either Best Buy, Future Shop, or Staples.
If you are in your return period for your laptop the store is legally obliged to take the unit back regardless of why you are returning it. The BS that someone got about having to open up another unit is pure crap. It's about 5 mins of paper work to RTV your "faulty" unit. Simply do not back down and do not leave the store until you get what you want in this scenario. I say this because you are legally in the right in this situation.
If you are outside of your return date then get your "issue" elevated with ACER like the one fellow did eariler in the thread. If you are not being elevated ask to speak to a supervisor, then their supervisor etc till the problem is dealt with.
Just please be nice when you're doing this, belidgerant, but nice!
Ask and get the phone numbers and email address of the area or district managers for whichever company you are dealing with. They are the ones who will whip the bad managers into shape and make them fall into line.
My store does carry the version of the 8920 with the screen that goes to 1920x1200. It is in fact the only version of the 8920 my store has.
I have checked and everything I have said will also apply in the United States as well.
I only wish I could be there to see you rip into the management about your units being advertised wrong.
Please don't rip into regular employees about this kind of stuff, they don't get paid enough to deal with it. Where as ****ty managers are overpaid to deal with it. -
Phaleron, I think you are absolutely right that stores should take back these notebooks, especially if they are in their return period.
The problem is that WE don't want to return the notebooks, we want the notebooks to be replaced with notebooks that meet the advertised specification. I don't know if anyone has had a problem returning one of these notebooks. I know that Micro Center was completely willing to take care of that for me (return for full refund), and that others I know returned the notebooks to Best Buy without problems.
I know that some of us are disappointed that the retailers are not willing to exchange the notebook or that Acer is not willing to even acknowledge they have a problem. But I don't think many of us are surprised, and I hope that none of us are belligerent about it. It just looks like we have to pay $150 more for a model that has slightly lower specs if we want 1920x1080. -
The 8920-6952 sold at BestBuy.ca for $1299 is actually excellent value compared to other notebooks in their lineup and excellent performance even if it only has a 1680 x 945 screen resolution. To be quite honest the 18 " widescreen is too small to read text at 1920 x 1080 resolution any way. -
-
It may be for you but not for me. I'm 58 and wear glasses for distance and reading but I can read my screen without any problems with no glasses. -
WOW, this just gets more interesting every day. My BB manager called me back twice, but I have not heard from him yet on a resolution (hehe) to this situation yet; he was planning to call me back yesterday and I have not heard from him. (he did verbally extend my return time period, and note that the price dropped during that time, as well.) That's why I have not posted in a few days; nothing is happening on this end, and one day of dealing with Acer middlemen on the phone back when I first bought and discovered my lower resolution (July 25th) was enough to let me know that I was not going to get anywhere on that path.
It's true for me as well, that returning these laptops is not the issue, as we only want what we paid for.. so some combination of an exchange/upgrade/compensation is what I am after. Again, I bought this laptop to future-proof myself and eventually use as my main tv and general media center as I gradually downsize (I am a new empty nester), so the blu-ray issue is important to me, as well.
I'm very grateful to the box store manager who posted on the previous page, and think it would be well worth your while to read the other six pages, because every page seems to have some new revelation or layer of this issue revealed, and it is quite interesting.
Anyway, keep posting, everyone, because there is always something that will help another :^D Hang in there ~ I am, too! -
bestbuy.ca now has mine on for 150.00 less than I paid three weeks ago, and they have very recently corrected the native screen res specs on the ad online... still waiting for my manager to get back to me, will probably call him later. In light of the change in ad, I have an even stronger case in terms of the false advertising issue.... anyone else have any news?
-
Elisabeth,
Looks like BestBuy.ca finally got the message. They've changed the screen resolution specs to 1680 x 945 for the 8920-6952. Even more good news, it's now selling for $1249 ! -
Yeah, I saw that yesterday, satwar, and the comparable model in the States that really does have the 1920 x 1080 (supposedly) seems to be sold out everywhere. Hmmm, what to do... I wonder what others have been able to do short of returning or exchanging for something else... I wish people would post with results! I've got all the old ads and reviews mentioning issue, all printed out, with time stamps and so forth. Guess if my Best Buy guy isn't going to call as he promised, I will have to go over his head.
Anyone else getting this fixed in a reasonable way??? -
Let me throw in another model number 8920-6048, retailed at $1299 before it disappeared from stores. Surround sound didn't work or operator didn't. Sent to Acer Fix in Temple Texas. Was told that if I wanted to keep box that had specs don't send it because they will not send back. Operator not working again, sent box. They where true to their word spec box did not come back. Surround sound worked. Never did question the 1080. Now wondering what is difference between 8920-6048 and 8920-6837 beside price.
-
Hi everybody.
My 8920 came from directcanada.com
Here the link
http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=10140ST5724&vpn=LX.AP50X.347&manufacture=ACER
Acer 8920-6030 Core 2 Duo T8100 GeForce 9500MGS Bray 4GB 320GB 18.4IN WUXGA+ Vista Premium Notebook -
Does the graphics card drive the screen @ 1920 x 1080 ? -
I have been interested in this unit after seeing an 8920-6837 demo at Staples. After reading this thread I have had some misgivings about going ahead with purchase. Yesterday, August 17th., The Shopping Channel had a special offer on these units that the ACER rep. claimed had just been manufactured within the last week and flown in expressly for this show.
They do not give the complete model number, just that it is an AS8920!
The specs are Core2Duo, T7500 2.2 GHz, 18.4" HD, 1680 x 945 res. TFT LCD, 16x9, 4GB ram, 320 GB SATA HD, NVIDIA 9500M GS, etc.
This leads me to believe that perhaps the real error was with the ACER marketing branch, who may have mistakenly listed these as 1920 x 1080. I say this because in various threads here, posters have responded that ACER claims their machines are right on spec.!
The units being sold now as being newly off the assembly line are listed as 1680 x 945 so it seems possible to me that the original ads mighthave been issued in error.
-
yes i saw that very same ad. After going through this whole fiasco/ ordeal, it was quite disturbing to see that guy selling this messed up line to people on national TV. Knowing what we've gone through, I couldn't stop sni ggering whenever the salesguy mentioned that "this is a state of the art Laptop, freshly shipped from overseas less than 10 days ago, with the newest technology".
Newest tech yes probably (if you count the 9500 as new even though it was released about a year ago) but very unrealiable info/ shady marketing from it's manufacturers
Hopefully he has the specs right this time -
has anyone actually received a replacement unit from your retailer with specs as advertised in the original ads? I'd be curious to hear from anyone who has done this. You can PM me to share your experience.
I'm guessing most of us have either 1)returned for a full/partial 2)compromised & kept the unit
Show of hands? -
if ACER and the 'BOX' stores would make an appearance in this thread we'd have a true to life tech based soap opera!!
-
In fact Bill Lynch, the Acer representative, had an e-mail line open during the show "[email protected]" and I told him about the confusion in Acer marketing of the 8920 series and he stated that all Aspire 8920 series has the 1680 x 945 screen and only the HDMI output was 1920 x 1080.
That doesn't explain the 8920-6030 that apparently does have a native screen resolution of 1980 x 1080 though. -
The funny thing is that I would have bought the 8920 anyway if they had specified that the resolution was 1680x945. But I didn't like that the specifications were misleading and I was worried about what other corners they cut cost-reducing this notebook from the model that was reviewed by the Press.
I ended up buying a Sony FW instead, and I'm happy with it.
My guess is the 8920's they are selling on Shopping Channel are the ones that Micro Center and the other retailers returned when they found out that Acer had misrepresented the specifications. -
I was so pissed off with how badly this unit was marketed versus what was actually manufactured by Acer. I was also pissed off with Acer Customer service for arguing with me that my unit (8920-6952) came with 64 bit Vista, their record keeping system and hence service, is of no value to anyone. I was pissed off with BestBuy for being so slow at reacting to the specifications advertising issue.
In short I returned for a full refund, including postage each way. I couldn't run away fast enough.
The funny thing is that for the money this is still a great value. I just lost trust in Acer. -
I am sorry to hear that our friends in the North are still having such troubles. I have to say I am going on week two and so far the 8920 from bestbuy.com has been wonderful. Is there a chance you can order from the states and still have it be a value?
My only wish, they put the N option in for the wifi but I am taking care of that by getting a new card and running the third wire -
Well I just bought one at Staples Canada.
It was advertised as 8920-6837. The date sticker on the bottom says June/08.
It says 8920-6837,however it says 8920G on the front of the laptop, anyways it only goes to 1680x945.
According to all of you this model 8920G 6837 should have 1080p,well it doesn't. I asked the sales guy about the troubles with the confusion before I bought,he told me it's 1080. Said I have 14 days to return if not happy.
So apparently Acer hasn't done anything in Canada about this issue.
We always get old stock and hosed with the prices.
Whats the purpose of blueray if not HD? I put in Spiderman 3 and black bars on both top and bottom of screen, haven't attempted to change any video drivers.
I'm contemplating returning it. actually too big, wont even fit on my desk. -
I've also noticed that the hard drives are partitioned one is Acer C: 144GB
the other is Data D:138GB for a total of 282 GB
Where are the other 32GB from my 320GB hard drive??? -
As far as I know the only unit that anyone on here has claimed is 1920 x 1080 is model 8920-6030. But I'd only buy from a vendor who accepts returns, no questions asked, and so far I haven't stumbled across one in Canada. Lot's of 8920-6030 offered for $1400, but if you buy from these vendors you need an RMA from Acer, and Acer Customer service on this screen resolution issue is rather poor.
Also, according to the Acer representative I talked to on The Shopping Channel, the video out is 1080p on the 8920 series notebooks. -
-
And my acer Aspire 8920G with Nvidia GeForce 9650M has a max resolution of 1920*1080, are you guys saying that this is a fake resolution or what?
-
Fisken, if you can set the resolution for the LCD in the laptop in Display Properties to 1920 x 1080, then you don't have the problem that many of us have had. I was able to connect a TV on the HDMI output and set the resolution of that to 1920 x 1080, but the maximum resolution it allowed me to set the internal LCD to was 1680 x 945.
-
-
so the hard drive is supposed to be partitioned? and the missing 32GB are for recovery files? Also battery power is blah........sucks power up big time..
still haven't decided if keeping it..
Other than the video fiasco is it a good machine? -
i wish you luck and hope you have a good experience with your SONY. i know any tech support issues w/ sony will surely be handled better than ACER handles thier tech support problems.
it's too bad ACER will not stand behind the SPECS as provided to thier customers (BOX STORES) and much worse that they refuse to do a simple screen swap for thier END CONSUMERS.... but i guess it goes to show where thier minds are at..... TOO BAD THE BOTTOM LINE COMES BEFORE GIVING CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY PAID FOR!
but first, i'd try to get some compensation from the box store if you really like the PC and want to keep it.... tell them you've checked the price of the screen upgrade and you feel that a refund of HALF of the cost of the replacemant part would be fair..... at which point they will make a counter offer or refund your money (assuming you are still under the 30 return time)
so to compute acutal hdd size you need to divide 320,000,000,000 by the result of (1024 X 1024 X 1024) which results in just above 298 actual gigs of HDD space, then subtract the hidden partition size from that..... usually 13 gigs for VISTA,, which leaves 285gigs of HDD space for the user to access..
it's the **** hard drive company's weak attempt at marketing a "BIGGER IS BETTER" type of stratagie.
hope that clears up some myths... and excuse my math... it amy be wrong... but the priciple underlying it is why HDDs are never the size we thought we bought!!!! -
Hi, everyone,
I returned a SONY FW yesterday to Bestbuy New Westminster BC, and exchanged for Acer 8920-6952. I was not expecting it to be 1080p. But after setting up all Vista configuration, and I got 1920*1080 at max nVidia resolution. It says "native resolution of this screen"...
I checked the box, it says 18.4inch HD+Cine..., production day is June 18, 2008. I will upload some photos tonight.
Seems that you need some luck with Acer. -
The one I am talking about is sold at bestbuy for $1249+tax with 2*320G harddrive.
-
Unfortunately that doesn't speak well for Acer's quality control. Just speculation, but perhaps a management decision to ship the early production models, perhaps due to unavailability of 1980 x 1020 screens, and hope not too many notice.
Good tip on the date of production, it gives us a benchmark to look for. If the production date holds out as the determining factor for everybody, then we finally will know what happened.
Thank you for the post. -
kevinlgc, that really is a fluke, because that one is now advertised on bestbuy.ca as having 1680 x 945 now... and a new one, very similar, showed up for 999.99 there: http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10109079&catid=26975 -
I saw the new Bust Buy Canada Acer 8920 6432 model.I've never seen a computer with so many different model numbers. Maybe that's why they screwed up,the techs can't keep track of all the different last 4 numbers!!! Anyway the new BustBuy model is non blueray...and a smaller drive, and 32bit Vista. But it has the newer T7500 processor, I don't understand Acer with that...put the newer processor in the cheaper model??
I picked mine up at Staples Canada, fully loaded,320GB so it said...they scam on hard drive too. only paid $999.99
I have an old compaq laptop that connects to my router at 130mb. This acer only connects at 54Mb?? Whats the story with that? They cut corners on wireless too?
It doesn't even connect to my 1080P HD Tv via HDMI output...says driver not available or compatible or something like that..so maybe the HDMI port is just for show too?
The Acer arcade viewer is pretty touchy too.
Also has anyone even found a case for this thing? and acer accessories are hard to find too.
Anyways I'm returning it...It's a nice laptop even without HD..but I honestly don't think this laptop will last, and with all the problems and lack of knowledge of their own products, and corner cutting. I don't need the hassles..The CPs's are made in China, and headquarters in Europe....that's A LOT of land in between.
Gonna wait til someone comes out with a real HD 1080P display.
HP has a nice 20.1 inch screen, and it would make a nice desktop replacement, and a 5 hour battery life, the Acer is horrible on battery,I barely made it through Spiderman 3,watching it with black bars on both ends of the screen.
Also has anyone even found a case for this thing? and Acer accessories are hard to find too. I asked around for a docking station, they told me check Acer website...Did and that website is always down in Canada when you click support.
I may get an HP in the future, easy to find accessories, unless Acer shapes up BIG time. -
The Canadian Shopping Channel was selling for $1399 with free shipping, and a 3 year warranty through Acer.......Good luck with going through Acer for warranty claims.
-
Just noticed the new BustBuy $999 model is only 3GB RAM!!AND NO Bluetooth.......GO buy at Staples it's cheaper... if you want it. You might get lucky and get an 8920G 6837 with 1080P.
-
Excuse me for butting in, but I'me new here. I've been following this discussion for a couple of weeks and I was wondering if anyone has checked out the AS8920-6671 that PC Connection has in stock. I REALLY want the full 1080 native resolution (with all of the other goodies, of course). The price is around the $2500 mark. Is it safe to assume that this is the real deal? I don't want to settle for a lesser model, so I am willing to wait and see if this issue sorts itself out.
Info is much appreciated. -
As I posted earlier, I purchased an 8920 from Micro Center. MC had advertised the 8920-6837 with 1920 native resolution but when I got home the model was an 8920-6961 with the lower screen res. I simply called MC and spoke with their Service Manager and they have been in contact with me every few days since.
It appears Acer makes the 8920 in 2 processor/motherboard configurations which is the main difference in the price ranges: $1200ish and $2200ish. Of course they have different configurations with differing amounts of RAM +/- bluetooth etc. That's nothing new. The problem has been in the marketing of the screen resolution. Acer and therefore all of the retailers selling acer have promoted the unusual screen resolution of 1920x1080 (WUXGA = 1920x1280) on all models as one of the defining attributes of the 8920 Gemstone Blue series. Even the models listed on Acer's website today are different from the models listed when this thread started, but their is no indication that a model exists or ever existed with a screen resolution below 1920x1080. This fact alone is what started this thread when many of us who purchased the 8920 model realized we had lower screen resolutions of 1680x945.
Micro Center corporate contacted me today. Micro Center local and corporate have been very professional and understanding with me and acknowledged that this issue should be resolved and is nation wide. Its probably an availability issue with the 1920 screens, but MC told me they were looking at october before they received the new models from Acer or Acer's distributors with the proper screens and that they would be willing to replace the laptop at that time. I also noticed that Micro Center has removed the 8920 model completely from their website. I also noticed that Acer has updated their website to reflect the model that MC was advertising, the 8920-6837. So they are obviously planning on making this seeming elusive laptop. When this post started Acer was advertising appartently older models on their website with lower processor specs than anyone who posted here had recieved demonstating that Acer has been evolving this laptop with newer and better components as time moves forward.
Maybe Acer knew what their "eventual" or "future" model specs were going to be, released those to their distributors and retailers and then just continued to manufacture the 8920 with the parts they had and were currently receiving while they waitied for the newer parts to arrive. Of course this is no excuse and is sloppy at best. This is somewhat apparent since each of the retailers all advertise slightly different spec'd models of the 8920 and even people withing this post have indicated different model T processors. The problem is many of us received model numbers that were not advertised anywhere and had lower screen resolutions. I suspect that they had a hard time getting availability of their 1920x1080 screens and simply substitued the 1680x945 screens and came up with a new model number like the 8920-6961. Somebody somewhere knew what was going on, and I'm sure this type of thing happens all the time. Acer doesn't make all of the parts they just put them together. They just screwed up by using a lower res screen when this particular model can not accept that because of the way it is marketed.
We all know that computer hardware specs and availability are evolving and changing all the time and we now have a window into how that can affect a company as seemingly as large and (wishfully thinking) perfect as Acer. But the chain is long and involves multiple companies from the suppliers to Acer and the distributors and retailers of the Acer product. Acer is immedeatlely at fault for purposefully manufacturing and distributing a model that goes against their 8920 philosophy. Bad Acer. But then their distributors accepted those models. Bad distributors. Then the retailers accepted and sold those same improperly sped'd models. Bad retailers. We the consumer simply purchased what we trusted was the advertised model and "caught" them in their lie. Good consumers. So somewhere along the line someone lied or crossed their fingers which has led to this issue. And because of this issue, Acer has been exposed and stung. It may have cost Acer more to come up with a new model line that didn't have the 1920 screen than gambling and getting machines out the door with the 1680 screen for a short period of time. I'm sure they didn't choose to receive the 1680 screens over the 1920 screens, they probably just NEEDED to keep manufacturing machines and the 1920 screens probably weren't available. Welcome to the capatilistic world of manufacturing and supply and demand. Well they gambled and lost with a few of us, as we have called them out on this and made it public.
All I want is the 8920-6837 that was spec'd, and I believe that I have taken the proper steps to get it by working with my local retailer and explaining the situation properly. It would be better if Acer would stand up and say sorry, you caught us, take our highest end model as restituition, but they have already demonstrated that this is between the consumer and the retailer. So of course it would be ideal for my retailer to say, sorry for your troubles we are providing you with this better model thank you for being a valuable customer, and then knowing in the background that there was going to be some sort of corporate fist fight (that I would love to see on pay per view - with complimentary ticketes to me of course) to have the crap kicked out of the offending parties.
So for now I am simply going to enjoy the model I have now and explore Vista 64 and simply wait until october to see if the new model that MC receives is the 8920-6837 or better and has the 1920 screen and then swap it out. So far I have been enjoying my 8920, it seems well manufactured and hasn't given many issues to make me believe that its a subrate machine (except for the screen of course).
I'm surprised how large and somewhat off topic this post has gotten. I'm also surprised others haven't had the "success" I have had at dealing with their retailer. As long as you get a commitment that they will take care of you, what more do you want. A retailer can't magically produce a machine in a short period of tiem if it doesn't exist. Use this as an opportunity to develop your communciation skills, this is an easy one to win.
Patience Grasshopper. -
All,
I returned my 8920-6920 (1080p) to Bestbuy New Westminster BC, if anyone wants to grab that one, please go ahead. Nothing wrong with it, the screen is really nice. The painfuly thing for me is that I tried to fit it to all different laptop bag, with NO luck. I returned it and got a SONY FW170.
Reading all the posts in the thread. I believe the issues are:
1) Production date (mine is 2008/06/18)
2) Graphic card driver
3) 64bit system (mine has 64bit vista)
4) LUCK
It is a nice desktop replacement, and I like the design with the battery can be taken off without leaving the a$$ empty, very good design for its purpose. Its harddrive is only 5400, so a bit on the long end.
Have fun -
Dicota makes a carrying case for the 8920, in the US Dell is the distrubitor, but has developed some problems. It is called the Dicota Multigiant carrying case and it works great with the 8920
-
Hi there!
Thought you like to know that I have the same problem here in Sweden. The models seem to have other names here though. I bought the 8920G 6A3G25BN which should have the 1920*1080 resolution according to this: http://www.expert.se/WebArchive/documents/150732_811.ppt
Of course, it doesn´t. I can only get 1680*945 and when I e-mailed Acer Sweden about this they claim that this model only has 1680*945, and the representative recommends me to adjust to 1440*900 which also is a problem since the next possible step is 1280*768...
Anyway, I sent them the link above so it´s just wait and see...
I did found out though that models with for instance the name 934G50BN seems to have 1920*1080 which I guess makes sense (4th generation?)
Have also e-mailed retailer who would check with Acer, more to come I guess. -
Update on different european version of the 8920 and spec's of the resolution on each model (as printed on Acers webpages):
6A3G25BN - WXGA
603G25BN - WXGA
6A4G32BN - WUXGA
834G32BN - WUXGA
934G50BN - WUXGA
934G64BN - WUXGA
The first two positions tells you what processor it has (6A=T5750, 60=T7500, 83=T8300, 93=T9300). The fifth and sixth positions gives the size of the HD (for instance "25" = 250 GB). Also the two top ones with "3G" in it has an ATI Mobility Radeon instead of GeForce gfx).
Still, nowhere in the description of the 8920 it says that some models doesn´t have the full HD resolution. It simply says, in different languages "The new Acer Aspire 8920 is the first- in- market 18.4" widescreen notebook with FULL HD 1920*1080 resolution..."
I know, haven´t got much to do right now... -
As Rsadix stated, our problem isn't about drivers, specs or manufacturing dates. Our problem is that we were sold a model which is supposed to support 1920x1080 but was switched out for a model which does not. We were cheated.
I'm waiting for a response from MicroCenter. Glad to hear they are going to replace them in October.
One NEW problem with the 8920-6961. We can play Blue Ray disks with no problem. However, when we try to play a standard DVD, we get an error that the player doe not play disks for this region. We have a Japanese region DVD so we tried that one too with the same error.
Anybody else have trouble playing standard DVDs on their 8920?

Acer 8920g not 1080p?
