Rsadix, thank you for a great post with so much input, and getting the thread focused again. Your thoughts are similar to mine, and I hope everyone is being as patient and polite as they can be, because it will go a long way in getting what we were sold.
I would imagine most of us on here are indeed concentrating our energies on getting the native screen resolution corrected to what we were told we were getting. I'm also imagining all the trusting consumers who have bought these models and may not discover the issue until too much time has elapsed to do anything about it ~ my guess that those of us who are doing something represent a very small percentage of the total number of people affected, indeed.
My 22yr old son told me when I asked, that the difference in price between the 'wrong' screen and the 'right' one is between 600.00 and 1000.00, which I feel is the negotiating range, and is born out by the difference in price between our models and the supposedly higher end 8920's.
I had not heard back from my BB comp manager for over a week after the date he'd planned to call back with some news (after checking with his higher ups), when I received a message yesterday from my BB rain check dept that my 'item' had arrived. I called back and found out that another one like mine had been ordered for me, but I had to wait until this morning to speak with the manager. He was surprised as well, because he hadn't ordered it, either, so when he told me his corporate office had told him to 'just make the customer happy', he imagined they had taken that step to try another one.
He called back soon after setting it up, to announce that it was the same as mine ~ big surprise. I shared how your MC is handling your case, as a standard setting goal (and I can't help wondering as you do, what the eventual outcome at a corporate level will be). He had no way of knowing what models would be coming in or when, in the future, and sounded like he was pretty burned out in general when he asked what I would like to do. I told him about the difference in price in screens, and said I would take a partial refund and keep the computer, if we could agree on an amount. A range was discussed, and at this point, he is checking with his bosses again.
Hopefully Acer will come clean with the retailers (all involved, really) and reimburse them for everything they tried to do for us consumers, to cover for them, but that is possibly just a pipe dream. I still think the more people who do fill out the simple one page form on the Better Business Bureau site, the better off we will all be in the future. Fill it out with your country's Acer corporate address and phone numbers, which are easy enough to find on their sites. Let's leave the retailers out of that discussion at present, as they were duped, as well.
-
BobInTX, mine is playing dvd's okay so far, tho I've only played two, and I have no blu-ray discs yet...
-
By keeping the unit at a reduced price you are punishing the retailer by reducing his profit margin, but even worse you've rewarded Acer by keeping the unit.
The only thing you've achieved is get a good deal on a laptop, congratulations, but anyone can get because of returns coming back that are being sold as Open Box deals.
Now if the retailer suffers enough stock sold at reduced prices he might fight back at Acer by refusing more shipments and returning unsold merchandise.
But for sure keeping the unit is not sending Acer any message at all, because the only message they understand is money and if you keep your unit they make their money. -
dont take it, push for the right model. I gte you will regret it if you dont.

Here is my update from Microcenter three weeks into the issue:
"Sir, the only thing I can tell you right now is that we are checking into the problem and if you let me have your phone number we will call you back with an answer."
They've clearly already looked into the problem. They are now selling 8920-6961's on their website instead of 8920-6837's. They list the display as:
18.4" Widescreen SXGA CineCrystal Display
Only problem is that it isn't an SXGA display. SXGA is 1280x1024 in 16:9 ratio. WSXGA is the widescreen equivalent of SXGA and is 1680x1050, which is also wrong.
Go figure. -
ok so i've read a couple pages of this thread and i have an 8920-6030 so does that mean im fine when it comes to the screen resolution or no? also i was told that there was a bag that would work with this besides that targus xxxl bag. what other bags fit this laptop can someone post links to them?
-
Amazing. A few days ago a Google search of Acer Aspire 8920-6961 would bring up this thread and very little else. Now, you get page after page of sites selling this little gem. I wonder how many of them actually post the right resolution.
Still can't play DVDs.
I am starting to think refund is my best option.

what about the bag problem someone said there was a link here to the bag but i couldnt find it and i dont wanna spend $83 on a bag
-
No link, just a name and a place, Dicota, dell $45
-
Ok, new poster here.
Has anyone had the resolution issues with the 8920-6671? -
I was wondering that myself. Also, does the 6671 have a slot for a second HDD?
-
I was passing through Toronto the other day and dropped into Acer Canada offices.
I asked them, if they could tell me which 8920 series had the 1920 x 1080 native resolution screen. They stated that only the Aspire 8920-6983 & 8920-6030 models have the 1920 x 1080 screen. All others have the 1680 x 945 screen.
Now I wouldn't take that to the bank, and make sure you understand the vendors return policy before you buy, but I thought I'd pass on what they said to me. -
I think that is part of the problem. I seems as though acer is releasing the same two or three 8920 models with different coorisponding numbers after that. In all my research (in the U.S.) I haven't even heard of those two model numbers.
To my knowledge, in the states its 8920 6671 and 6048 -
which model has 9650m gs ddr3 in it..?
-
according to cnet, the 6671
-
u guys know that acer just about to launch their 8930g. I think they want to escape from 8920g issues..

Go to the Dell website, under tab for carrying cases look for Dicota Multigiant. Gives you a phone number to call. $43. Another route is to put in "Dicota Multigiant Carrying Case" in your search engine, will come up with a couple of European listings.
-
It is listed on the left side under size " 20 in" (1)

I've got all the ads from when I bought my 8920-6952 from BB, printed out with time stamps, etc, so I still intended to follow through with BBB and Acer if I kept mine... having it in hand, I would have more clout with BBB and Acer might eventually make good on mine with something similar like the 8920-6983, which is selling for around 150.00 - 200.00 more than mine.
Again, returning it for a full refund seems like the best move all around. If I do decide to buy the 8920-6983, I'll be looking into whether this has the resolution it says, and whether the seller will stand behind that statement, for refund purposes. It may be my next purchase, unless a better option or value-for-money becomes available.
I can't help but think that returning our laptops only puts them in the 'open-box' basket at the stores, and doesn't really affect Acer in a meaningful way... does anyone know for sure? By the way, what did you end up with? -
-
I haven't bought again. I've been unable to find a vendor with a good enough return policy to take a chance on the 8920-6983. Maybe Acer will get their act together for the 8930 series, but i will still only buy from vendors that guarantees full refund if not satisfied. -
-
I now see that Acer has changed their website to reflect that some models do have less than the 1920x1080 resolution. Definitely not the original message or philosophy of the 8920 model line. And obviously in retrospect since there may not be much surplus of the 8920-6961 since I know that I purchased the last one from Micro Center in all of Atlanta Ga a month ago, and they have not replinished their inventory.
Interesting information about the 8930 being released, assuming its a "better" model than the 8920 that would be one option for an exchange.
Following Bob's input I went out and purchased a blue ray DVD and tried it in my 8920. Regular DVD played fine (no issues with region) and the familiar "insert new disk wizard" popped up and let me choose windows media player, windows media center, acer arcade... but when I put in the blu ray disc it only gave me the option of the acer arcade (or similar I can't remember) The disc played fine, although the mouse doesn't work and I couldn't figure out how to navigate the onscreen menus, and the picture looked fine. So overall the DVD and blu ray playing experience has been "normal" I just need to figure out how to navigate or see if windows media player can play blu ray. -
With all the confusion I haven't had anyone comment too much on the 8920 6671. Has anyone had any luck with that model number.
Also, with online sales only of the 8920 6671 seeming to be the only option, it looks as though if that is the acer I want to purchase I am going to have to take a leap of faith and just order the darn thing from a site that has a good return policy and hope that there are no issues.
Any input on a good online source that would fit that bill? -
Looks like Acer is finally advertising the models they way they meant to...On the site the 6837 is now the 6961, my order with amazon for the 6837 changed from instock in 2-3 weeks to being "Temporarily unavailable" So i ended up cancelling it after looking at Acer's website, and went to Micro Center to pick up a 6961 today, and it is fantastic, I do hope everyone with the issue from before gets it resolved! =)
-
For those in Canada that are interested in the 8920-6983 (which is supposed to have the 1920 x 1080 screen according to Acer), I noticed that SwiftGamer has them with a 14 day return full refund guarantee, if not satified.
I've ordered one and will let you know if it really is 1920 x 1080. First on-line retailer I found that offered a decent return policy and carried the feature set I was looking for. Here's hoping Acer didn't dupe me again, it will be the last time they get a chance if they did. -
Anyone find the trojan horse in Acers own game files? I believe it was the pool game.
Just shows that the quality and customer service isn't there.
Glad I returned my false advertised Made in China managed in Europe Acer. -
Regarding the Blu-ray compatibility: that should be to do with Acer's in-house software not Profile 1.1 compatible - the last time I heard it only worked with 1.0 properly.
Still, I think I will be buying the Intel T8300 model, as PC World in the UK is doing a very good clearance deal at the moment. -

I believe it is 14 day return policy like Best Buy, satisfaction guaranteed. You'll like the faster processor, it's a beauty
-
-
Well, I think I'm going to have to settle on just getting a full refund and buying a new unit. Microcenter refuses to tell me what their solution is. I've asked repeatedly and am now convinced that they are doing nothing.
-
Thanks to you, satwar, and to that Acer guy who told you the truth at the head office! Hope he does not meet with the i-phone girl's probable fate.
Now, I wonder what will help our American friends. Interesting to note the slight difference in the descriptors on the stickers. Something to look for, shoppers: My 8920-6952 'sidebar' sticker on screen said, "CineCrystal16:9 True cinematic view", and the 8920-6983 says, ''CineCrystal16:9 1080P True FULL HD view", w/caps and all! -
Glad you like it Elizabeth, I couldn't be happier with mine. The extra horsepower in the CPU is very noticeable. The sound system is not to shabby either when watching movies. All-in-all an outstanding unit.
Now Vista is another story. -
I was able to purchase an AS8920-6048 from Microcenter, they only had one left in the entire company in New York and they transferred it to my local store at no additional cost. The clearance price was only $864 US for a brand new unit! The full 1080p LCD is breathtaking, the best I've ever seen on a notebook LCD.

Elisabeth & satwar,
I'm new here & stumbled across this thread, very informative as I'd been looking to purchase an 8920. As happy owners of the 'real deal' 8920 how do you find it for gaming, if indeed you play games. I'm at the point of replacing a desktop system with a notebook & like to play the occasional game, would you recommend it for this use? Like you Elisabeth, the best deal i've found seems be at swiftgamers, however they do not list the 6983 model you mention only a 6030 for around $1400CDN, is this the same spec as yours ? It looks like a good deal but I'm also hedging on the arrival of the 8930 series. Help me out here, TIA.

John, welcome to the forums!
I'm on an Aspire 6920G with the same 9500M GS that the 8920-6983 has, and it's been pretty capable so far. 20-60+ fps in TF2 at 1366x768 with all options on high, and that's only with a 1.83 GHz processor. My guess is that it would be good enough for moderate-heavy gaming, at reduced resolutions. The real experts on the Can My Notebook Run It? topic can help you out with that.
Of course, you were right to hedge your bets and wait for the Aspire 8930. The 8930-6321 is available for purchase at resellers right now, with three more models due by October 1st. Take a look at Acer Canada's product catalog PDF, and scroll down to the Aspire 8930 section. Just keep in mind that those prices are estimates.
The 8930-6321 seems like a decent upgrade compared to the 8920-6983. The CPU's a slight step downwards (2.0 vs. 2.2), but you're getting a far better GPU in the GeForce 9600M GT, which should make your gaming experience leaps and bounds better. -
Thanks for that TehSuigi, I think I'm going to wait for the 8930's to trickle in, where have you seen the 6321 available ?
I find it curious that Acer, after all the hoo ha over the 8920's screen resolution, would release an 8930 that has 1680x945. -
Yeah, check here
Thanks for the links. Think I'm going to go with the 6550 tho', smaller HDD but faster CPU. -
Huh - that's interesting.
And good call on the 6550 - you're not getting a smaller hard drive, just one 320GB drive instead of two. Who really needs THAT much space, anyway? -
even more win ^^ -
More win at more cost - the MSRP is around 2.5K on that sucker!
-
Well, here is my update. It is a sad story.
Microcenter just screwed me royally on this whole thing. They never got back to me with the "resolution" to the problem. So, I contacted them today. It will be 2 months to the day that I bought my laptop tomorrow, and they promised me that the replacement units would be in by now.
So, today they told me that they have no idea what I'm talking about. The SKU on my receipt is for an Acer Aspire 8920-6961 which only goes up to 1680x945. It was never supposed to do 1920x1080. When I pointed out that they SOLD me an 8920-6837 which was SUPPOSED to, they said:
1) Our system shows that we're only selling the 8920-6961 and that's what you bought.
2) Acer's website doesn't show that there is an 8920-6837 and the -6961 is 1680x945.
3) They won't do anything for me.
I asked why they are selling the 8920-6961 for $250 less than I paid 2 months ago he didn't know. I said isn't that becase the $1200 price was for a unit with 1080P and the lower unit is now selling cheaper.
I asked when they changed their website and catalog system. He didn't know.
I told him I still have the website printout and in store advertisment showing the model number as 8920-6837 with specs of 1920x1080. He said it doesn't mean anything.
He also said that I'm outside the return window. I told him that I had been told by 3 people (and gave names) that I would be allowed to return it anyway. He said, too bad.
I've been looking and cannot find an 8920 that does 1080P now on Best Buy, Circuit City, Microcenter, or any other websites in the US. Where can I get one?
