I think the 8920 has been officially phased out at this point, with the updated 8930 being ushered in as the replacement model. The 8930 has shown up in Canada recently and I'm assuming it will be released in the US relatively soon.

Alternatively, you could look at HP's HDX18, which sports the 1080p high-brightness screen, and Sony is getting ready to release an 18" 1080p as well.

This laptop's LCD performance is good for only HD films? (Like blueray etc.)
Is it good for Divx films? Because we are all downloading films with divx format you know.

Some people said, "it's not good for gaming. HD lcd and 16 or 18 inch screen aren't good for all popular games."
    is it true?

    Thanks...

BobInTx this is the best model for the Acer 8920G, (8920-6671).. You can find it at SuperWarehouse.com. It supports 1080p FULL HD and comes with the 9650M graphics card as well as a 2.6 Ghz CPU. Good Luck.

I recieved my 8920G about two weeks ago and I think I can answer some of your questions.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a true 1080p model, after browsing this thread this was the first thing I inspected before opening the plastic coverings and after vista had installed. The screen looks absolutely amazing, and I'm simply lost for words when watching the blu-ray demo disk.

As for gaming, I think the screen fares quit well allthough my experiences come from only one game I've had time to install. (this machine certainly outperforms my decade-old desktop. ;)) Think of it as watching normal prodcast content on your widescreen television. Yes, it seems a little streched, because the 16:9 ratio is far from the optimal 4:3 screen ratio, but I for one am not bothered. If your first priority is gaming, then this probably isn't the best computer for you.

As for DivX and such, from my experiences the screen is also good for downloaded movies, if you feel like advertising that sort of thing. Some movies will give you blanks at the top and bottom, few none at all. I think this really depends on the movie source and it's resolution. But most of them are wide-screenish to begin with, so they certainly fit the 8920G's screen better than, say, a regular 4:3 or 8:5 screen.

A few other notes about the screen now that you've got me going. There is some backlight bleed at the bottom of the screen, but nothing dramatic. It's only visible when the screen is black. As for viewing angles, the vertical aspect is not so great, but IMHO the more important horizontal angles are adequate, which means you can easily use the 8920G to watch a movie with a small bunch of people. For me, this was the first priority when selecting this particular laptop.

I have been out of town and haven't seen this thread in awhile... Bob, don't give up because of one stick-in-the-mud... there is always at least one in every bunch. My suggestion is keep chasing a fair resolution (;^D), and if you will allow me, I'll say what you probably already thought of, anyway: You have names of ppl at your Microcenter who said they would stand by you ~ do they still work there? If so, seek them out, one by one, talk it out again, and if all you can do is get a refund, well, at least you will have your money back. As far as a replacement, I'm happy so far with mine, so I hope you get what you want, too (I will post the spec list of mine for comparisons). The latter four model numbers are different here in Canada far as I can tell, from anything I have seen available down in the States, so I don't know what to say as far as looking for the same one down there, other than check the side sticker on floor models for the differences I pointed out a couple of pages back, on this thread. It seems to be sold out at swiftgamers.com here in Canada, but I will keep looking for them regardless and post when found. As I remember, I had to use a link to find it, because it was not coming up with their search feature, so I will look for link (probably used google price comparison results). Hang in there!

Okay, my present model, the Acer Aspire 8920-6983 bought at swiftgamers.com just over a month ago was 1540.00CDN and is out of stock there, but I see it selling at two places according to pricegrabber.com for around a hundred dollars more. Here is one link to the specs, just for everyone's info: http://www.ashlin.ca/p.asp?man=Z00196&pn=M001057303 When it is sold out, that page may disappear, so here is my (hopefully readable) cut-and-paste of those specs from that seller:

OK this was seriously big... Now I see :| ... I have got a n Acer Aspire 8920G T9300 with "18.4"Full HD 1080p Acer CineCrystal LCD"".... Now I've played the demo disc and watched High-def stuff on the web, and was sure that this was 1080p... But if its not?

Is this the reason the machine wont play blu ray discs?? It plays until the DVD-menu, and then it just stops... Everything "looks like" HD, but it just wont play BluRay discs... Does anyone have a clue??

I have no idea how long this thread has been dead or what... Anyone figure out a solution? My 8920 has already been at Acer (because of system crash) once.... And now I dont know if it is 1080p at all :|

Thomas, I thought all the 8920's played blu-ray, so I don't know the answer to that; maybe someone else here can help you. I can help you figure out your native resolution, tho... right-click on your background, then choose 'display settings', then look for the little gauge near the bottom of that screen that lets you adjust the resolution ~ the highest it will go is the best you have. Do you know the further four numbers of your model number, btw? The 8920-xxxx (not the processor number) will tell you more about what you have ~ you can see from this thread (and numerous other sites like this one) that it's been trickly to determine what one is buying, especially without knowing about this native resolution issue before buying. Hopefully you are still within your seller's return policy 'window', if you are not satisfied... good luck!

    Hi newbie here.

Sorry i havent read all the thread but i really need help with my 8920G!
Can anyone tell me why when i plug in my hdmi cable and plug it into my panny 1080i that it is not picking it up? I pluged it in when i first bought it and i could see me desktop on the screen but when i tryed to play a blueray it said driver error. I thought this was a issue caused by the tv being 1080i and the 8920G being a 1080p output. But now nothing!

Is there anyway i can check that my hdmi port could be faulty or is there any setting in the 8920G i have over looked.

Also when i try to get sound from hdmi through my onkyo HD22 nothing happens either any thoughts?

Can this laptop produce Dolby TrueHD?
    Please Help.
