    Hello,

looking for some quick advice for some friends, i have 2 friends that own aspire 8930G 18 inch laptops, both have died within 2 months of each other, they will no longer power on, i have confirmed the power bricks are okay and this doesn't appear to be a battery issues, no lights, except for power brick, and there is a faint clicking from the power connection port on both laptops when they are plugged into power, my brother also has this exact laptop, i am worried his will die next, could it just be as simple as replacing the power connectors in the laptop??? or could it be a dead mobo or graphics card issue...looking for cheap quick fix...
these are no longer under warranty.
    thanks!

that's a coincidence - mine packed up just last weekend with exactly the same symptoms except the faint clicking seems to be coming from one of my 2 HDD's. I live in Japan and don't want to get Acer here to repair it. So far I have tried a new battery-pack which didn't help - my AC brick is OK. I ordered on Ebay a replacement power-jack with harness which I am waiting to arrive and then will try partially dismantling my laptop and installing it - it looks relatively simple. Reading the past mails regarding this problem that may do the trick as the power-jack seems to be a weak point of this model - failing that next step will be replacing the BIOS back-up battery.

    HI Japdel,

i can 100% confirm the sound is coming from the power power jack for my 2 units, (put your ear close to the power jack) as i just tested both laptops again, and neither has a hard drive inside, good luck with the replacement jack install, please let me know if that solves the problem, and if so please advise me of the part number you ordered. thanks!

    Hi moe999,

I will remove the HDD's and check again where the clicking is coming from. The part I ordered is item-number 330799451226 in Ebay but many others are available some with the harness some just the jack but the latter would involve using and soldering the existing wires - my take is if I'm replacing the jack I might as well replace the harness at the same time to minimise any possible potential problems and the prices are all quite similar. I hope the parts arrive soon - in the meantime I will do the preparation work and once I finish will let you know the outcome ASAP!

    Hi moe999,
regretfully the replacement parts didn't arrive so far so at the weekend I could not attempt the repair. As I am away from home now until next Saturday hopefully by then I will have the parts and time. I will keep you posted with either my success or failure ASAP!

I exchanged the power-jack and the BIOS battery - it took abot 1 hour but the repair was unsucessful. I have no power indicators showing but there is some quiet clicking noise coming from somewhere. I cannot do anything more myself and will now consider sending my laptop to Acer.

Thanks for the update, sorry to hear that it didn't work :( hopefully acer can fix this at a reasonable price, i know in Canada if the acer fixes the laptops it will cost about $200 each plus shipping, not a great value considering you can buy a new 15 inch laptop for about $400
good luck and don't forget to back up your data or take out your hard drives before shipping them to acer! i don't want you to loose your stuff.

I had this issue with mine, clicking noise and the blue light also flickers in time with the clicking. The fault was in the power jack.
One of the wires was broken, I repaired it myself, it was a little tricky as there's not much space to work in, but the wire break was obvious
Getting access is easy, just remember to remove the battery, there's 2 screws directly underneath the power jack
