Hi guys,
Do any of you know what can be upgraded on an Acer 8935G. I know the obvious like HDD and RAM but anything else?
Does anyone know what size of HDD's fit between 10mm and 12mm, I think thats the 2 sizes of HDD you can buy?
^^^ Not sure if this makes sense but what I mean is you know that some HDD's that are more than 500gb they are slightly taller 12mm maybe. Does anyone know if the 8935G is restrcited to the smaller HDD's or not.
Cheers

Anyone of you Acer guru's have an idea?

Hmoodie, I haven't a clue about whether the 8935G can accept 12mm hard drive. Only the bulkiest of systems can pull that off. Stick to 9mm hard drives just to be safe (or better yet, go for an SSD!)
The 8935G can have its CPU upgraded to any Core 2 Duo (or Quad, if you're lucky), and is one of the rare few systems that can upgrade its GPU as well. Unfortunately, not many upgrades exist right now - Acer needs to release more cards in the MXM-B format the 8935G uses. -

Thanks alot

You can go to the Q9100, but that's only 266 MHz faster and not worth the hassle.
Or if you're feeling lucky, you can try to install the Core 2 Extreme QX9300 at 2.53 GHz. It just depends on whether the BIOS supports it.
If you aren't as big of a multitasker, consider a fast dual-core instead of the slower quads. Maybe the T9600 (2.8 GHz), T9800 (2.93) or T9900 (3.06) is more your speed? -
If not possible, not a big problem, happy to upgrade to P8700 or similar. Do I need anything special to upgrade other than a screwdriver?!

Conradish, good call checking the other thread - it was me doing the digging up for an 8930G user and sure enough, the 8935G also has two possible motherboards; one supports quads (which need the 45 W power supply and cooling), the other doesn't (35 W covers all non-Extreme dual-cores).
You can always check the part number on your motherboard itself! -
I guess to get the motherboard I need to take the whole base off..can't find a disassembly guide anywhere, hopefully its all pretty straigh forward though...maybe I peek tomorrow... -
I found the MB part number for my 8930, on a sticker, under the RAM. This find was after I had already purchased Q9000 and found that it was not supported. Still have CPU if anyone is interested. So any 8930 owners out there pull out your RAM and see if you are lucky enough to have the correct MB version (MB.ASZ0B.004). I think you will find that if it came with a P or T processor the MB will be version (MB.ASZ0B.001).
I hope this helps someone interested in upgrading thier 8930.
I have also been toying with the idea of purchasing the correct MB and performing the upgrade myself but feel that the 8930 CPU heatsink and fan may not be the correct one as well, any input on this from anyone, would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Especially considering that a fast dual-core like the T9600 (2.8 GHz), T9800 (2.93 GHz) or T9900 (3.06 GHz) can outpace a 2.0 GHz Q9000 in some tasks.
Give THAT a spin. -
In reply to the question if the 8935G can handle the 10 or 12mm hard drives... NO!!! :-( i bought a 12mm 1TB replacement disc for this laptop and it didn't fit.. fortunatly the shop took it back and i got hold of some of my boss's extra cash and bought and intel x25-M SSD instead and this is really a speed improvement...

Hi guys, anyone sure if there is an upgrade option for this that would be worthwhile?

Well the fastest card Acer have released on MXM was the GTS250M

I was thinking of upgrading the hard drive to a SSD, getting 8GB memory and possibly the x9100 processor? Would there be any major benefits in upgrading to the GTS250M?
Cheers

I just replaced the two 500Gb harddrives in my 8935G (Q9000) with a 120Gb Vertex2 E OCZ as primary, to increase speed and reduce power use, and a 750Gb WD7500BPVT to maximise storage in the 9mm format. The WD is formatted according the 'Advanced Formatting Technology', and it's running perfectly under W7 64bit. The upgrade went without problems. The primary harddisk performance index jumped to 7.7, and sure enough, starting and shutting down Windows, and starting programs like Photoshop is much faster. Also it makes a lot less noise. I use my computer often on board of airliners, and it very often 'overloaded' the power outlet in my seat, causing it to shutdown (the power outlet). I hope that the lower power consumption of the SSD will solve that problem.

Does yours come with the H2O bios or pheonix? If it's pheonix then you could do the same trick as me to get 2.26ghz out of the q9000.

See if your bios is in the pheonix bios mod, then if it is flash it to your mobo.
You should not have speedstep option in the bios, dissable it.
Go to the thread in windows/os section and put a line in its settings file.
Now when you start throttlestop it will get your CPU to run at its maximum single core speed all the time (plus it has voltage control so you can lower it to the lowest possible).
When you go on battery you can have another profile it will automatically shift to if you want it to clock down, but my battery life does well at the high clock speed and low voltage anyway. -

Also how will I know or get my BIOS to run this MOD? -

I think its an H20 bios now that I check in which case it's not possible to do what I did.
-
Was thinking either the T9600, or the P9500 as both are relatively cheap, and would give me a decent clockspeed & cache boost.
Any thoughts please folks??
Cheers. -
I put a T9900 and 8 GB RAM in my 8935G, everything's working fine. Check the fleabay for bargains on the T9900, I got mine from a seller in China who was selling about 10 of them.

So, I popped the back off my 8935 over the weekend, preparatory to doing a couple of upgrades...
The RAM & HDD are easy, and there's an order in with those nice folks at Crucial for a 128Gb M4 SSD, and 8Gb of memory. 2 minute job to fit that lot, a little longer to install an OS, but that's half the fun
What's the procedure for upgrading the CPU though? What other bits of the chassis do I have to dismantle, and are there any "gotcha's" to watch out for?
I'm fine with tinkering with PC's, it's just I'm used to assembling and working on desktops, not notebooks... -

AFAIK you better be prepared to take the whole thing apart, look for the service manual, it will give you a step by step.

can u tell me which prog. and Bios u have used for overclocking ?
And how do u made it ?
I just bought an qx9200 and now i want to OC my rig too.
Thanks alot and Happy Hollidays ! -
