    hi guys,

I bought an acer aspire 9300 laptop a few months ago, one of the reasons being at the time among others that it has a 120GB hard drive. I dont know how its took me this long to notice but i just have. the HDD is partitioned into 2 sections already wen the laptop comes out the box, however each partition is only 33.3GB meaning 66.6GB overall. I can access both of these through 'my computer' one is called DATA and the other C drive which also already had 13GB used up out of the box. where the hell is the missing 60GB? please advise. cheers in advance

well there is a hidden partition to allow you to do disk to disk recovery. If you have XP it will be about 4 gigs in size, media centre will be about 5 gigs, and vista home premium will be approaching 8 gigs.

obviously that isn't all of your missing space, i recommend performing a disk clean up and performing a scan disk of both of the partitions as there may have been a build up of redundant files (such as temp files) and there may be an error in the file system causing it to incorrectly report the amound of space. when you perform the scan disk be sure to tick both of the boxes

right click on the drive, click properties and the window that appears should have a tab saying tools; the scan disk option should be at the top.

i'm only doing this from memory as i dont have access to my notebook with vista on it so some of the detail may be slightly different
