    Hi

Ive got Acer 9300 laptop. Hitachi DVD drive. Vista OS. For the past month or so now my DVD drive just seems to disappear itself. I put a dvd disc or audio disc etc into the drive and it doesnt pick anything up. I go into my computer and the drive is not their either. I re-start the computer and it re-appears and then disappears again. Any advice and help would be much appreciated.

    regards

Go into device manager....IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -- ATA Channel (reserved for the drive, will be labelled as ATAPI)..!! See in which mode is it....UDMA or PIO..!! Also try uninstalling it and then restart, and Vista will install it itself..!!

Next time it disappears, see what is showed under the ATAPI controller and DVD/CD-ROM drives, again in Device Manager..!!

OK, Andy, Which should it be-UDMA or PIO? Mine says Ultra DMA.
I Have the same problem. Have uninstalled and reinstalled the drive several times. It shows up in Dev Mgr, but won't read. If I click on "E:" it says "please insert a disc and ejects.
