DID the Acer download kill my laptop?? read before answering please...

I've got a 9303 and managed to get life out of it by resetting the bios (disconnect everything and hold power button for about 40 seconds) it then would boot load windows etc.

However it seemed to need to be reset after each boot, so i figured a bios flash was in order... Downloaded this from here: http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_v1.20.zip?acerid=633646425136058971&Step1=Notebook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire%209300&OS=V10&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=EMEA_27

Ran it as administrator from Vista (as I couldnt find a DOS version at the time!) and it erased the BIOS and then screen went white and it sat there doing nothing. I knew it was dead but left it for 5 minutes or so before finally switching it off.

Now that file is different from the other files here in that it DOES NOT contain the bios file that these all have here: Acer Europe - Service & Support, FTP server Notebook, Aspire 9300, BIOS they ALL inc v 1.20 HAVE the .wph and .rom files in them!

So did the v1.20 file I donloaded have missing bios files or can someone verify it works fine?

I've tried booting off a USB floppy drive with Fn + Esc and it does nothing, drive doesnt work even after 30 seconds holding keys.

    Any other suggestions?

    Cheers

    try this CrisDisk_AS9300_AS700_TM7510
    Code:
Restore BIOS by the Crisis Disk
Enter this function by Fn+ESC, and Power Button. To use this function, it is strongly recommended
to have the coexistence of AC and Batter powers. If this function is enabled, the system will force
the BIOS to enter a special BIOS block, called BootBlock. RD/CSD can use this special BIOS code
to recover the BIOS to a successful one if previous BIOS flashing process fails. However, before
doing this, one Crisis Disk should be prepared in WinXP. Detailed steps are as the followings,
Prepare the Crisis Disk in WinXP (Crisis Disk will be released when BIOS V1.00 is
    released)
Insert the Crisis Disk to a USB floppy drive which is attached to the failed machine.
On the power-off state, press Fn+ESC and press button. The system should be powered
    on with Crisis Recovery process.
BootBlock BIOS starts to restore the failed BIOS code. Short beeps should be heard
    when flashing.
If the flashing process is finished, a long beep should be heard.
Power down the system when Step 3.5 is finished.
If the crisis recovery process is finished, the system should be powered on with a successful BIOS.

Thanks, OK i have bare motherboard on the table with screen connected and it appears as if USB is not fully fuctional, no KB lights with USB KB connected or USB floppy drive. USB memory stick lights up but doesnt appear to do anything after that.

However the DVD drive does appear to boot! well it makes all the right noises, but that leaves the point of how the hell do I make a automatic flashing bootable CD ISO??

I can make boot CDs no problem and put files on them, the problem is getting it to automatically run the Phlash.exe. I've tried to make one do it but with a blank screen its hard to know whats happening.

Maybe I need a floppy drive to connect to the interface instead of the DVD drive and that would work (as its easier to make the floppy that the CD).

    Cheers

Ok I'll test a boot cd minus the bios file on another 9300 and if all seems well then reburn it with the bios file and try on the dead one.

After that then I either wait for a dead motherboard cheap enough and swap the bios chip over (yes i can solder) or just put it back together and sell it as spares repairs.

Anyone care to test the bios file that killed mine as in my 1st post? :D Go on you know you want to. Now if that file killed my Acer I think they owe me a new motherboard....

    Cheers

Made bootable CD to automatically run Phlash16.exe with flash string and bios file and it doesnt work. Speakers make no beeps at all connected, so this is shafted. Gee thanks Acer for a fine download there! Totally f*cked my laptop nicely.

Sounds like more than just a bad bios flash if you were having that many issues with it prior to the flash.
