Hi
when you start the laptop, FAN comes on fine, then shuts off and never spins again ( both in vista/xp/linux). I ordered 2 new fans and same results. can you suggest anything? and yes laptop shuts itself off when gets really hot
thanks
-
What sort of temps have you been experiencing during the shutdowns....??
-
I dont know, I am not much of a PC person, when I run IE or firefox, at that point it shuts off
and than I have to wait 5 min, than restart it, how I can check the fan speed?? -
You won't be able to check the fan speed.
You can use HWMonitor to monitor the temps of the CPU, GPU and the HDD.
Which CPU has it got ? (Pentium M or Celeron M ?)
You could give undervolting a try. -

UPDATE: I just installed htmonitor/fan speed, they both will not display the CPU temp, even thou they are showing HD temps -
-
Ok, undervolting won't work. It probably is a Celeron M 380.
You can try these software in succession.
Realtemp, Coretemp, RMClock, Notebook Hardware Control, PC Wizard 2008, Everest Ultimate.
All of them are clean, and you should be able to monitor the CPU temps, with at least one of 'em. -
Andy

Any Luck with those software ?
-
Nope, they will not work with my cpu ( something about core) only Hmonitor/fan speed works but they will only display HD temps, not CPU. can I advertise here to sell this crappy laptop, getting tired of it
-
Yes, you can. Or you can try and upgrade the CPU to a Pentium M. They run alot cooler than Celerons, has alot more functions, and it is recognised by almost all software.
-
I tool sl7sm from my IBM, installed it, worked, temp still not showing, fan will not work, and shuts off
-
if you currently have a CELERON M 380 working in the system, you should be able to run any of the following CPUs AS LONG AS YOUR BIOS SUPPORTS THEM... i'll try to look thru the BIOS files for your model and see if i can come up with any info...
one thing you should do is UPDATE THE BIOS to the most recent release..
here is the CPU LIST:
Pentium M 1.3 1300 1024 400
Pentium M 1.4 1400 1024 400
Pentium M 1.5 1500 1024 400
Pentium M 1.6 1600 1024 400
Pentium M 1.7 1700 1024 400
Pentium M 710 1400 2048 400
Pentium M 715 1500 2048 400
Pentium M 725 1600 2048 400
Pentium M 735 1700 2048 400
Pentium M 745 1800 2048 400
Pentium M 755 2000 2048 400
Pentium M 765 2100 2048 400
Pentium M 730 1600 2048 533
Pentium M 740 1733 2048 533
Pentium M 750 1866 2048 533
Pentium M 760 2000 2048 533
Pentium M 770 2133 2048 533
Pentium M 780 2266 2048 533
the celeron 390 would work but there is no reason to put another "HAND WARMER" in the PC!
i notice that the pentium 760 didn't work so if a BIOS update doesn't resolve that,, then you may have to stick to 400Mhz FSB cpus.... the ones in THIS COLOR,, but let me do a bit of research before you buy anything,,, i may have a more definative answer on which CPUs WILL WORK.. give me an hour or so...
OK i just re-read your last post... so the 760 works but the FAN never comes on and the system over heats and shuts down?? is that correct?? -
I think updating the BIOS would be a good idea, before selling it.
-
yes SL7SM( 760 ) worked like a charm, I already updated the bios as well, Fan still not turning on and shut off, I also tried SL7SA, which worked as well but same problem. The fan turns on when you push the power button, as soon as acer logo comes up, it shut off, and never tunn on back when you are in windows/linux, system get hot and than turn off
-
The Pentium M is supported by RMClock, so temps should show up with it.
You can also try undervolting the Pentium M in RMClock.
There seems to be no hardware fault, as the fan does power up, and the connector on the notebook is working. It is more of a BIOS/ACPI issue. Have you tried a clean install of the OS ? -

| C0 M206D820 (Dothan) |
| B1 M8069545 (Celeron) |
those are the CPU codes for CPUS supported by BIOS version 1.30 unfortunately i am having a hell of a time finding a way to cross refrence the CPU ID CODES with either the eSpec# or the CPU model...
if you have trouble locating the files to update your BIOS let me know... i've found a BIOS VER 1.70... not sure if there is a newer one or not!
i'll keep trying... and maybe we can get somewhere.... but there are atleast 4 PENTIUM M cpus that the BIOS supported even back in 2005! -
after reading i agree 100% with andy... try reinstalling the OS... you may need to point a fan into the PC vent to get air circulating to keep it from over heating...
but an NBR member had the exact same issue when upgrading CPUs in the ASPIRE 5315.. when going to the T9500 cpu from a celeron he had system lockups and shutdowns due to heat... after booting once,, he had to let it set for 10 minutes to cool before trying again!!
but after reinstalling XP PRO the system worked fine and the fan began to work.... i think it installed a different ACPI driver based on the CPU detected at install... so your situation is very similar....
he had to put a desk fan in back of the laptop where the fan exhaust is just to get air circulating and prevent overheating... -
well I cant get to see the temp with the programs and pentuim M, I will try to reinstall the OS to see if that helps.
I have 1.4 Bios, can you point a link to 1.7? It might do the trick
thank ya all -
http://www.mediafire.com/?ypxwx5kggul
that has both windows and dos flash files... look at the JPG, it has a bit of instructions....
and if flashing in windows... you need to make sure the PC DOES NOT OVER HEAT and SHUT DOWN.... that would be terrible....
but if the FAN doesn't work in DOS either,, i guess it doesn't matter too much... just try to make sure that you have air flowing thru the system to help cool it to prevent a shutdown durring flashing which would really render the PC useless..... (i don't think i have the motivation to do a BIOS recovery tonight) -
thanks a lot, I did the flash, Installed XP Pro than server 2003 and still no good, I guess I will just sell it , But I really appreciate all your help
-
i take it the fan works correctly with the celeron? -
Well, its good in a way that you're selling it. At least, it'll give you a chance to upgrade. Intel 915 is kinda pre-historic now.
(But it is the only mobile chipset that gave good results with easy pin-modding) -
sell it and look for an aspire based on the i960 chipset..
they are very upgradable,, but they use the SOCKET P CPUs..
i've seen REFURB 5315s selling for $370 in the US -
Hi
I used SL7SM/SL7SA.....
and I already bought Dv6368se, will be here monday, and will sell this acer on ebay I guess, or buy a fan base and use it a little file server
anyway, you guys rock, very very helpful. You are more help than geeksquad -
Enjoy your HP..
But keep an eye on the HDD temps. I tried helping out a guy with a DV4t who reported a 58*C HDD temp. -
will do andy, One question, mine is coming with 250GB, what the Max SATA is available for laptops these days, did they make 500GB yet or 320GB still the best you can get?
-
WDC has released the 500GB 5400RPM HDD (WD5000BEVT). It should be good.
BTW, the Seagate 7200.3 drives are super cheap and pretty fast. -
btw the one I bought is , I think I will stick with 250GB for now, WD5000BEVT isnt released yet, I bought a 320GB 5400 of ebay already as well
and yes, do you fix laptops? I was thinking if I can send this acer to you, I just love this guy.
let me know -
Well, I don't really fix laptops, but I normally help users in voiding their warranties.
The laptop fixing job is for noobies, like Acer.
If you want to play around with it, I can upload its Service Manual for you. -
Well, I did dissabmled it earlier, everything look fine, the thing what is bothersome is the fact when you turn it on, fan works just fine for like 3 second and than dead, Honestly, I am one of those noobies, I hardly know any hard core stuff, someone in some post suggest to connect the Fan power to disk/rom drive and I was looking into it, but cant find anything
do you have some related material I can study? -
See if this helps you in anyway

hot wire the fan,,, talk about warranty voiding.... but i doubt that thing has any warranty left
if done right,,,, it would work!!! -
Hi guys
I could shed some light regarding why none of the software use were able to pick up the temperature of the CPUs used by buba007. I was told by one NBR (I think it was flipfire) that old Celeron M/ Pentium M don't have a temperature sensor. This could explain why RMclock and else didn't read the temperature.
Assuming that the above is correct, that would mean that there must be a temperature sensor built in the motherboard and not in the CPU.
When this laptop is turned ON, the fun kicks in because there must be an instruction in the bios to make it turn ON. The contol of the FAN is passed to the OS (Linux, Windows) once the OS loads. The bios doesn't rely in the CPU temperature to turn ON or OFF, but the OS relies on the motherboard sensor to control the FAN.
So if I'm correct then the sensor on this Acer motherboard may be faulty... I don't know but this assumption doesn't sound right since buba007 managed to re-install Windows without his laptop switching off during the installation.
Guys I don't thik that his problem is CPU related, it must be something else.
Buba007, in the meantime you cold undervolt your CPU and select only multipliers below 0.8v (about 1.3ghz). I did this in my friend laptop and now the fan in his laptop never get ON even under heavy load.
-
if he has the same issue with the original CPU then you are 100% correct in your assesment of a BAD TEMP SENSOR... i had forgotten that the pentium M's didn't have built-in temp sensors... these CORE2DUOs have caused me to forget so much!!
good point... and i guess we need to have the OP test the system with the original CPU,,, then see if it has a temp sensor built into it?? nice logic there.. -
Acer 9500 CPU does not work, any suggestions?
