I'm pretty much torn between these 2. The only difference is that

the 1662 is the 3.0ghz and the 1681 has the 1.5ghz centrino. i don't really care about baterry life, I'm more concern that i will be giving up performance if i get the 1681 with the centrino.

    Any help is appreciated

The 1662 will run faster for you. I'm not sure what all you want - desktop replacement? If you're not hauling it anywhere (sounds like its a heavy beast) and keeping it plugged in, then the 1662 seems like the way to go.

I mostly want connectivity for when I'm at school and being able to conect to the wireless lan that is set up. I wouldn't mind playing the odd game that is available on it. I do my gaming on my desktop this wouldn't be replacing it, just augmenting it so that I would have another computer to be able to use away from my house, while at work or at school.

Well, both will give you the connectivity you want. There is about 1.5 lb difference between the two, but I'm not sure how much weight is an issue for you. Obviously the P4 processor is going to outperform the PM, but if you're mainly just surfing the internet you will not notice much of a difference. You're also paying less for the P4 notebook as well. But the 1662 is meant for power and as a "desktop replacement" whereas the 1681 is much more portable. Hope this helps.

Surprisingly enough the store I found has the PM for less than the P4...exact same features except for the CPU.

How is the overall build quality on the Acers?

I have 1681wlmi for a week now and its running pretty well. It seems it is sturdy enough to handle some travelling. I choose Centrino cause I had P4 before and it HEATED as hell, and the fan was pretty noisy also. Centrino is cool so far, so I can play even at night with my girlfriend at a same room sleeping.
