I am looking for a general purpose laptop (including gaming) for around $1000 and have found an Acer Aspire AS1691WLMi (1.5 Ghz Centrino, 512MB, 80GB drive, DVD burner, 15.4" screen) at CompUSA for only $999. However, the site mentions nothing about the graphics chip. After some searching it looks like it comes with the ATI X600 64MB chip, is this true? Would this system be ok for some gaming, like HL2 and UT2004? I am thinking/hoping it would be equivalent to ~2.8 Ghz P4 with a Radeon 9700. Thanks!

Well I went to the local CompUSA and bought the last one they had in stock but I haven't opened it yet. Before I do I want to make sure it has the X600 chip. The store did not have a display model set up (I took the one they were gonna use) so I wasn't able to verify the X600, and thier info card didn't mention anything about video, neither does their website. Can anyone confirm that this model has the X600?

On acer's site, regarding the Acer Aspire 1690 series it says, "ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X700 PCI Express™ graphics with 64 or 128 MB of VRAM and Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 support present the highest standard of visual performance."

The X700 is actually better than the X600 and should play those games fine.

However, I cannot confirm if this specific model has that card. It may have the X600 or the integrated graphics. I would just open it, and see. It should have a sticker on the laptop that says what card it uses. If not you can always check the properties once you've turned it on. If it doesn't have the x600 or x700, just bring it back to COMPUSA and tell them why you are returning it. They will take it back even if you have opened it.

    On W3V - sweet

Crap, I was afraid of that. I knew it was too good to be true for only $999.
