So my Aspire5610z powers up for like 20 seconds, can hear and see the fan, then the fan turns off, and I never get anything on the screen. Let me add that the power seems to be fine, even after the fan turns off I can still eject the DVD tray and it seems to still be getting power...?

First does anyone know whats up?

Second does anyone know how to reset the CMOS on this laptop, via taking out the battery or jumper settings (since I don't have any video).. I looked at the service manual that I downloaded and saw nothing there...?

    thanks for any help!

Avoid taking out the CMOS battery, that might come later.. :p
Remove all sources of power, i.e. battery, usb devices, ac supply, etc. and then press the power button down for 20 seconds....see if that helps as it would reset the BIOS..!!

angad1608 I tried as you said and no luck...

Again, I think it's really weird that there seems to be power, even after the CPU fan turns off and even though I'm getting no picture... That seems to tell me that the Motherboard is probably fine, but maybe I'm wrong?

try the CMOS clear jumper trick..!!
although the symptoms you are talking about occurred in my laptop when i had installed an incompatible cpu....so maybe there is something wrong with the CPU..?!

What is the CMOS jumper trick?

I see the J3 jumper right underneath the RAM, however, there is no actual jumper there, nothing for me to remove or anything...

    Am I missing something?

Do you know where the actual jumper is, thanks to the diagram I did find the J3 under the ram, and I found something that says CMOS, but I don't see an actual jumper there...

thanks for the help so far!

I would say dont do it....it is mainly to flash the bios to lcear ol passwords and data entries and in some cases u have to reflash it again, and if anything goes wrong and the bios goes dead....ur motherboard will be rendered useless..!! anywayz do u see a cell around with it....it must be enclosed in some sort of fibre cloth..!! see if it can be removed in anyway but dont be forceful..!!

Ok without the computer in front of me, I can't tell you anything but there should be a 'run position' and a 'clear position'...You put the jumper in clear position for a moment, then you put it back as it was before. The laptop should be unplugged and without battery, you know that right? :).

I can't see it clear even from this photo..

ok this is tricky the jumper is not a switch or like on a HDD a small piece of plastic. it just a small patch of soldier contacts.
that you have to bridge with a small piece of copper wire or tin foil.
    thats them under the ram.

tp make sure check for the same thing but marked Coms reset

If resetting is not very beneficiary then I will probably not go through the trouble of doing it.

I'm starting to think that it's the CPU more and more..

You mean you'll rather buy a new cpu than trying the reset cmos option? :)

can you get your hands on a cpu to check it ?
or will you have to purchase a new one ? maybe your right if not sure don't do it. but if you have nothing to loose give it a bash :D

So do I need to just place a piece of tin foil over the 2 sides of the J3 jumper then?

    1. Power off the computer
    2. Remove the DIMM cover on the bottom side of the computer.
    3. Short-circuit the two password pads or put a jumper on the contacts to short the circuit.
    4. Under the short-circuit condition, power on the computer and wait until the POST ends.
    5. Reinstall the DIMM cover.
You can short-circuit with a low resistance conducting wire, such as a copper wire or maybe tin foil..as hoggie has decribed above.. :p

So I tried a new CPU and resetting the CMOS, both with no luck...

Can anyone else think of what the problem could be?

IMO you either have a BIOS failure...

or your motherboard has suffered a major failure

use my search box to search for ACER BLIND BIOS FLASH

try that procedure if you can find it
